Book Description
Excerpt from History of England, From the Accession of James I. To the Outbreak of the Civil War, 1603-1642, Vol. 10 of 10: 1641-1642, With General Index to the Then Volumes Still greater, however, than the pleasure of bringing drud gery to an end, is that of being able to break new ground again. When, a year ago, the demand for this edition called me 05 from the work of writing the history of the Civil War, I had reached as far as the preparations for the siege of Read ing in April 1643, and I shall be glad to take up the interrupted thread. The time spent upon reviewing old work has, however, I trust, not been wholly lost. Especially in the early volumes something has been done to assimilate new information to the old, and to correct or tone down crude reflections. Imperfect as every attempt of this kind must be, from the impossibility of absolutely recasting the original work, what I have to ofler is, perhaps, not quite so imperfect as it was, though I have become aware of a certain want of artistic proportion in the book as a whole, and can perceive that some incidents have been treated of at greater length than they deserve. Book Description
Excerpt from History of England From the Accession of James I. To the Outbreak of the Civil War, 1603-1642, Vol. 3 of 10: 1616-1621 I have TO ask my readers to make two corrections in my account of the Parliament of 1614. I spoke of Montague as having been rejected by the City of London, and of Pym as having been the member for Calne. Montague, however, sat for London, and though Eliot was a member of this Parlia ment, Pym was not. The mistake was pointed out to me by Mr. Duncombe pink, who has printed in He Palatine Note Book the only existing authoritative list of this Parliament, from the ms. In the Kimbolton Library. He was good enough to send me a copy, after my own text was in type, to which I referred in a note, though I regret that I did not then verify by it the statements which I had made upon inferior authority. Book Description
Samuel Rawson Gardiner (1829-1902) was a distinguished Victorian historian of the seventeenth century who coined the term 'Puritan Revolution' and was noted for his use of and editorial work on primary sources. This ten-volume work was published in 1883-4, though he had already published eight volumes on the period 1603-37, of which the first two were considerably revised for this edition; and in later works he continued the story through the Civil War, the Commonwealth and the Protectorate. The series was highly regarded in its time, and reprinted often, although it was not without its critics. Gardiner aimed at writing 'scientific history', relying on the facts to speak for themselves. This ninth volume spans the period 1639-41, and includes chapters covering the First and Second Bishops' Wars, the Short Parliament, the Triennial Act, and controversies over religious and constitutional reforms.
