The large and constant supply of excellent food obtained from the seas all round the coast by moderate labour and expense, and the employment afforded to a numerous and valuable class of men, who become not only good seamen, but able pilots, since the successful exercise of their occupation depends on an intimate knowledge of the nature of the ground surface, the situation of banks and channels, with the particular direction and force of tides and currents, render the British fisheries also, in many points of view, a branch of political economy of great national importance. It has long, however, been matter of general regret that the subjects of this particular branch of natural history, so valuable as articles of food and commerce, and so interesting from their organization, and the peculiarities and beauty of their varied forms and colours, should, with the exception of those inhabiting the fresh water, and the marine species most in request for the table, be almost wholly unknown. Excerpt from History of British Fishes, Vol. 2 of 2 The history of the Salmon, and of the species of the genus Salmo, in this work, will extend to a considerable length; and some doubts existing as to the extent of their identity with the species of the Salmonid generally which are taken in the rivers or lakes of other countries of Europe, from the want of specimens with which to make actual comparative examination, the account of the species here inserted will be confined more particularly to a detail of what is known of them in this country only. Of the species existing in this country, the characters and specific distinctions admit of considerable detail: too much reliance has been placed upon colour, without resorting sufficiently to those external indications, founded on organic structure, which may with greater certainty be depended upon. In the scale of the relative value of parts affording characters for distinction, the organs of digestion, respiration, and motion are admitted by systematic authors to hold high rank; and in the hope to induce sportsmen to become zoologists - so far at least as to enable them to determine the various species they may meet with by a reference to those external characters which are the most important, - the specific distinctions in the genus Salmo will be illustrated by referring to the number and situation of the teeth, the form of the different parts of the gill-covers, and the size, form, and relative situation of the fins. The outlines here introduced represent a front view of the mouth, and a side view of the head, of a common Trout. Excerpt from The Fishes of Great Britain and Ireland, Vol. 1 of 2 Twenty years having elapsed since the last editions of the elaborate treatises on "British Fishes" by Yarrell and Couch were published, I venture to offer to the public a new work on our fish-fauna, wherein I have attempted to incorporate many of the discoveries of recent times. For latterly investigations into our fish and fisheries have been pursued with increased zeal, and many facts ascertained materially modifying some of the conclusions formerly arrived at. My desire has been to produce a work useful to the zoological student, fish-culturist, fisherman, and the general public - all of whom are more or less interested in the fish-fauna of the. British Isles, whether as regards their geographical, zoological, sporting, or economic aspects. As the value of a work of this description is much increased by illustrations, I have personally delineated every species from nature. Why I was unable to retain the services of my professional artist the subjoined letter from the Secretary to the Trustees of the British Museum will explain. The number of zoologists who have made the fish-fauna of our isles the subject for their special study is very considerable, as will be seen by the following list. While in addition to those who are not specially alluded to others have also done good service, either as compilers or investigators into the habits or other subjects pertaining to one or more of our indigenous species, recording their discoveries in articles sent to different scientific publications or in the pages of weekly and other journals, and which, so far as I have been able, I have referred to under the various species to which such remarks pertain. In the year 1662, Sir Thomas Browne compiled a list of the Norfolk fishes, on which he made several interesting observations; in 1684, Sir Robert Sibbald, in "Scotiae Prod. Nat.
