Excerpt from Historical Sketches of the Colleges of Wisconsin In Wisconsin, as elsewhere in our country, the earliest institutions for higher education originated with Christian churches of different names. However complete may be the organization of public instruction under state authority, there will always be place and demand for distinctively Christian colleges to infuse into the body politic some positive religious influence in connection with the processes of education. This has been recognized in our state by the readiness of the legislature to grant liberal charters for such institutions, and to extend to them the fostering care and protection of the laws. The accompanying sketches have been prepared at the several institutions in accordance with a resolution of the Wisconsin State Teachers' Association, and are published under the direction of the State Superintendent of Public Instruction, to be presented at the National Centennial Exposition, as one phase of the work of education sustained in Wisconsin. Excerpt from Historical Sketch of Education in Wisconsin The object of this work is to present to the National Centennial of our country, for 1876, an account of the origin and development of the educational system in Wisconsin. Though the state is comparatively young, it has taken an advanced position in fostering its public schools and its state institutions of learning. The academies and denominational colleges, while not immediately connected with our educational system, have performed valuable work for the state. The school system has been traced to its sources in the earliest movements in Wisconsin; and the successive stages of its growth, during the territorial government and under the state organization, have been carefully noticed. The materials of this history have been obtained from documents issued by the different state departments, from an examination of many of the places mentioned, from interviews and correspondence with the early pioneers, and from the personal recollections of the author.
