This book contains B&W images of the original survey plats for the State of Florida. Sometimes the surveyor will include a key road on the plat, as it meanders across it. The three major roads in this book are Kings Highway, Bellamy Road (sometimes known as Federal Road), and Spring Garden Trail. The intent of this book is to provide all the information possible from the BLM survey plats across the state. Sometimes the road is well marked and other times not so much. When the road is visible - modern maps will be overlaid in order to see how the old road aligns to modern routes - as well as - how close some of these well-known roads align to the same named road today. The famous N-S route - Kings Highway - is so named today on many sections of the old road - are they correct? Is the old road where the modern road is? Also included are many histories, such as Spanish Land Grantees, Fort Picolata and Fort Poppa, and other historical sites along the way. Appendix sections covers - DeLeon Spring (Spring Garden), Town of Volusia and Astor and how to understand Florida land grants.

The Search for Old Kings Road A first route into Florida British engineers built it before the American Revolution. This remarkable road ran from the Florida border at the St. Mary's river south to what would become the settlement of New Smyrna. It was intended to bring settlers into then almost unpopulated Florida. From 1774 it became the main route into Florida. It existed right up into the 20th century. Here were the battles, the famous men, refugees, the rich plantation economy, a huge slave revolt, and one of our country's worst wars, one that lasted seven years. Florida's Old King's road was important in its rich early history. The early highway has vanished, its stories untold, it is blocked by new construction often now existing in name only. This is William (Bill) Ryan's search for the history of this old highway and some it's stories. They resulted in four other books that tell of events along Old Kings, once called “An American Engineering Treasure.” Some small pieces of the original roadway still exist. They are vanishing unmarked into the Florida brush. By connection of the dots he found on old maps and early accounts a story evolves of this early American roadway along which much of Florida's history occurred. Author William P. A light from Heaven shown down, And I beheld through the briars The Mission Road of the Franciscan friars.” Early on the morning, April 6, 2013 while visiting the old Suwannee River crossing at Charles Spring, I saw this beam from the heavens shining as if to mark the trail for me. This digital image, entitled “Photograph of the Bellamy Road, Charles Spring, which is thought to be a part of the Old Spanish Trail,” was placed in the Viva Florida 500 statewide time capsule and was sealed in the R. A. Gray Building, Tallahassee on December 31, 2013. It will be opened on Mar. 3, 2095. The state of Florida is entering some significant anniversaries in its history. The year 2013 ushered in Viva Florida 500, a state effort to celebrate and promote the Spanish discovery of Florida and 500 years of Spanish influence upon it. The year 2015 marked the 450th birthday of St. Augustine, the oldest continuously occupied city in the United States. Consequently there has been a renewed interest in the most famous road in the state’s history. Yes, Florida can boast as having the oldest city, but perhaps it also has the oldest road, for almost from the inception of St. Ausustine, inroads into the hinterland ensued. It is surprising that Florida’s royal road, El Camino Real, has never been accurately defined until now. Many have heard of the Old Spanish Trail, but have misleading ideas of its use and course. Often times, it is confused with the trail of the same name out West. Some think it extended from St. Augustine to Mexico, and, perhaps, the greatest error, is to associate it with U. S. Highway 90.
