Era previsible que, con el final del II milenio y el comienzo del Ii de la Era Común, resucitasen discusiones sobre cronología y, sobre todo, predicciones, anuncios y especulaciones acerca del fin del mundo que son, en realidad, muy viejas. Han vuelto a ser personajes asiduos en las páginas de la prensa Nostradamus, Dionisio el Exiguo, Satanás, el 'Libro del Apocalipsis', el número 666 y un sinfín de asuntos relacionados con las creencias más difundidas sobre el fin del mundo y con su fecha. Todo ello forma parte de una remota tradición que, a Europa, llega a través de múltiples mediaciones. El cristianismo toma su visión apocalíptica directamente del judaísmo, del que procede; y éste se inspira abundantemente en otros legados del Oriente Próximo y, singularmente, en el persa. La primera parte de esta obra resume la genealogía del género apocalíptico. La segunda sintetiza la tradición del "quiliasmo", hoy igualmente viva, y que en los ambientes milenaristas cristianos depende directamente de lo revelado a Juan en Patmos sobre los mil años de reinado de Cristo antes del fin del mundo. Cómo medir exactamente el 'millennium' y a partir de qué fechas concretas es algo aún sin resolver, pues en gran parte depende de la fecha del nacimiento de Jesús, aún objeto de debate. El Fin del Mundo, el Juicio Final, el Apocalipsis, la Era Cristiana y la construcción del Tercer Templo de Jerusalén se presentan, de modo sintético, con recurso directo a las fuentes antiguas, poco conocidas fuera de ambientes especializados.
