Entre 1820 y 1930 alrededor de 60 millones de europeos emigraron a América. En esta obra se relata esa historia de ida y vuelta que ha sido la emigración española a Iberoamérica: desde el año 1880, cuando la industrialización, el crecimiento económico, la oferta de tierras, la demanda de mano de obra abundante, la revolución en los transportes y la difusión de la idea de “hacer la América” contribuyeron a que la emigración fuese un fenómeno de dimensiones hasta ese momento desconocidas, pasando por la crisis de 1929, que supuso el fin de la migración en masa, hasta los años noventa del siglo XX con el retorno de los emigrantes y sus descendientes. Pero también se analizan las variables que están detrás de la decisión de partir, como la existencia de una infraestructura económica, social, familiar y política. Las redes organizativas y de captación, las estrategias familiares y distintos procesos culturales son factores que orientan las corrientes migratorias, explican los destinos, las variaciones y la especificidad de los asentamientos por procedencia. Por otra parte, también resulta interesante comprobar cómo la adaptación e integración de los migrantes son fenómenos que guardan una estrecha relación con la imagen que se tiene de estos colectivos, hecho que a su vez está vinculado, entre otros elementos, con las actividades económicas que desempeñan.
