The Hip Hop Movement
Author: Reiland Rabaka
Publisher: Lexington Books
ISBN: 0739181173
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 432
Book Description
The Hip Hop Movement offers a critical theory and alternative history of rap music and hip hop culture by examining their roots in the popular musics and popular cultures of the Civil Rights Movement and Black Power Movement. Connecting classic rhythm & blues and rock & roll to the Civil Rights Movement, and classic soul and funk to the Black Power Movement, The Hip Hop Movement explores what each of these musics and movements contributed to rap, neo-soul, hip hop culture, and the broader Hip Hop Movement. Ultimately, this book’s remixes (as opposed to chapters) reveal that black popular music and black popular culture have always been more than merely “popular music” and “popular culture” in the conventional sense and reflect a broader social, political, and cultural movement. With this in mind, sociologist and musicologist Reiland Rabaka critically reinterprets rap and neo-soul as popular expressions of the politics, social visions, and cultural values of a contemporary multi-issue movement: the Hip Hop Movement. Rabaka argues that rap music, hip hop culture, and the Hip Hop Movement are as deserving of critical scholarly inquiry as previous black popular musics, such as the spirituals, blues, ragtime, jazz, rhythm & blues, rock & roll, soul, and funk, and previous black popular movements, such as the Black Women’s Club Movement, New Negro Movement, Harlem Renaissance, Civil Rights Movement, Black Power Movement, Black Arts Movement, and Black Women’s Liberation Movement. This volume, equal parts alternative history of hip hop and critical theory of hip hop, challenges those scholars, critics, and fans of hip hop who lopsidedly over-focus on commercial rap, pop rap, and gangsta rap while failing to acknowledge that there are more than three dozen genres of rap music and many other socially and politically progressive forms of hip hop culture beyond DJing, MCing, rapping, beat-making, break-dancing, and graffiti-writing.

Author: Uncle Jon
Publisher: Jonnie Sears, LLC
ISBN: 173353704X
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 270
Book Description
Come and join an emotional story about social redemption as seen through the eyes of Donald 'Hip Hop' Berry, a teenage high school bully. After experiencing head trauma from an automobile accident Hip Hop lies comatose on a hospital gurney when a devilish nightmare transports him back to the year 1855 and thrust him in the role of a plantation slave so he can get a taste of the disrespect he slam dunked on his fellow students. Hence, our story follows his torment when he is beaten with a bull whip; branded with a red-hot poker; forced to pick cotton; and forced to eat rotting food from a pig's trough. Finally, we will follow him and his adopted family's desperate attempt to flee the plantation with a pack of hungry dogs hot on their trail. We shall see how Hip Hop is forced to learn some valuable lessons about tolerating people different from himself, lessons that are remedial to the violent breaking news we see on TV every day. So for the sake of our families let's learn Hip Hop's lesson together; after all, can't one great lesson be enough for all of us?

Poetic Injustice & Laffing Aside
Author: Slater Kworrie
Publisher: AuthorHouse
ISBN: 1481788175
Category : Poetry
Languages : en
Pages : 109
Book Description
Never in my life did I ever contemplate composing a book of Poetry so I didn't and my apologies to those of you out there who thought I would dare categorize it as such when comparing it to the classics. For some unknown reason during the past two years, there has been an avalanche of rhymes materialising in my head on a daily and sometimes even an hourly basis. Everything that my eyes dropped on to or what somebody might have happened to mention in passing was automatically filtered into the verse as opposed to the voice box or voice-versa and summarily twisted and turned into a rhyming subject. Silly ,serious or just amusing, most were given an added ingredient of poignancy or irony that may have directly related to the complex world we live in. Flowing with the phenomonom, my thoughts seemed to urge me into re- producing other experiences that may have been lying dormant somewhere in the back of my mind since my first tangible recollections of life and the initial flexing of brain muscle back at the school of learning right up to the present moment. The anecdotes are again observations and stories picked up and stored over many, many years and embellished to produce an occasional break from rhyme reading. The Human Race warms to laughter and happiness in a serious, demanding enviroment and hopefully this book will bring some small ray of sunshine into your life to provide a welcome break from the daily grind. This is an enigmatic look at that life so to speak and like a drink, I trust you will enjoy it responsibly.

The Universe Of Reality
Author: A. Stinson
Publisher: iUniverse
ISBN: 0595488811
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 238
Book Description
The Universe of Reality questions many answers and answers many questions. There are many scientific and political deceptions forwarded to the general public, especially Americans. We have been deceived for hundreds of years. The comments and theories presented in this writing untangle and decipher the phenomena of light, gravity, the four forces, and many political deceptions. The Universe of Reality (UOE) theories are much closer to the truth than the wild, problematic conjectures scientist and politicians present as facts. About 90% of "accepted" theories are wrong, and some just straight lies, 9% twisted truths, and 1% arguable. The UOE theories combine the four forces (strong, weak, electromagnetic, and gravity) into one force, the universe of energy. These theories challenge older, accepted theories and conjectures by well known scientists such as Albert Einstein and Isaac Newton, yet the UOE theories are built on the older theories of well known scientists.
