Book Description
[Job's Speeches. Between Self-Reflection, Lament, and Dispute] The contributions in this anthology explore the intricate interplay between self-reflection, lament, and dispute within Job's speeches. The first section sheds light on both self-reflective processes and fundamental anthropological determinations present in the Book of Job. In the second section, the authors analyse Job's portrayal of God and his use of prayer language. Alongside intertextual references to the Psalms, humorous allusions and traumatological implications of Job's words also come into focus. The final section is dedicated to the social relevance of Job's speeches, which not only reflect on himself and lament to God, but also reveal social connections and hold Job's peers accountable.

Hiob in Qumran
Author: Rebekka Luther
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9004708863
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 257
Book Description
The six manuscripts from Ḥirbet Qumran (2Q15, 4Q99, 4Q100, 4Q101, 4Q157, 11Q10) are the oldest textual witnesses of the Hebrew Book of Job, which received its final redaction during the 3rd century BCE. But their different characteristics and fragmentary condition make it hard to draw a picture on what these textual witnesses actually testify to. This study combines Text- and Literarkritik while considering their individual features. The results unveil a history of reception of the image of Job, which goes hand in hand with an ongoing production and reworking of the text.

A King like All the Nations?
Author: Manfred Oeming
Publisher: LIT Verlag Münster
ISBN: 3643906749
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 349
Book Description
This book presents a plethora of perspectives on the phenomenon of kingship and state in the Bible and in history. Considered here are important parts of Old Testament literature, i.e. the Pentateuch, Deuteronomistic history, prophecy, and wisdom. Accordingly, the time span dealt with is quite broad, ranging from the pre-Monarchic era up until Hellenism. In addition, some contributions - reaching far beyond the boundary of the Old Testament - are presented, engaging thoroughly the archaeology of the "Holy Land," as well as the Ancient Near Eastern and Hellenistic context of the Old Testament. The Septuagint and the New Testament, repeatedly consulted in the book, turn attention to the questions of the history of reception. The book is based on an international symposium held in April 2014 in Prague. Of the 21 contributions, 15 are presented in English, while 6 more are in German language text.
