Book Description
The electrostatically deflected beam of the 184-inch cyclotron has been used with the stacked foil and absorber technique to determine the excitation functions for the following reactions: Th232(p,6n)Pa227, Th232(p,3n)Pa23°, Th232(d,7n)Pa227, Th232([alpha], p8n)Pa227, Th232([alpha], p5n)Pa23°, and U238(p, [alpha]8n)Pa227. The data are presented graphically and discussed individually for each of the reactions. Some rough excitation function data have also been determined for the reactions Th232(d,4n)Pa23°, U238(p, [alpha]5n)Pa23°, Th232([alpha],7n)U229, and Th232([alpha],6n)U23°. The results are discussed in terms of compound nucleus formation, transparency effects, and other factors in order to arrive at a qualitative picture for the mechanism of high energy nuclear reactions with heavy nuclei.

Book Description
Fusion excitation functions spanning the entire barrier region in 1 MeV energy steps for the two systems[sup 40]Ca+[sup 192]Os, [sup 194]Pt are presented. The results of fission fragment angular distribution measurements for fusion-fission of[sup 40]Ca+[sup 197]Au at several projectile energies within the barrier region are also presented. The fusion data is of high enough precision to allow for extraction of the distribution of fusion barriers from the second differential of the product of E and[sigma]. Basic coupled channels calculations which are in quite good agreement with the data are shown and discussed.

Nuclear Physics
Author: National Research Council
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 0309173663
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 222
Book Description
Dramatic progress has been made in all branches of physics since the National Research Council's 1986 decadal survey of the field. The Physics in a New Era series explores these advances and looks ahead to future goals. The series includes assessments of the major subfields and reports on several smaller subfields, and preparation has begun on an overview volume on the unity of physics, its relationships to other fields, and its contributions to national needs. Nuclear Physics is the latest volume of the series. The book describes current activity in understanding nuclear structure and symmetries, the behavior of matter at extreme densities, the role of nuclear physics in astrophysics and cosmology, and the instrumentation and facilities used by the field. It makes recommendations on the resources needed for experimental and theoretical advances in the coming decade.
