Book Description
The objective of the program is to develop a fundamental understanding of YBCO film deposition by Metal Organic Chemical Vapor Deposition (MOCVD) on biaxially-textured metal substrates. In comparison to other vapor deposition techniques, MOCVD offers the advantages of rapid deposition rates, film uniformity over large areas, and is not limited to line-of-sight deposition. The program includes a study of the a) influence of MOCVD processing conditions such as the flow rate of precursor vapors, precursor vaporization temperatures, oxygen partial pressure, reactor pressure, and the deposition temperature on the film features such as superconducting phase formation, composition, texture, deposition rates, uniformity in thickness, porosity and the presence of secondary phases, b) relationship between film microstructure and the critical current density (Jc), and c) influence of metal substrate and buffer layers on the growth and performance of YBCO.

Book Description
This is the first of three volumes of the extensively revised and updated second edition of the Handbook of Superconductivity. The past twenty years have seen rapid progress in superconducting materials, which exhibit one of the most remarkable physical states of matter ever to be discovered. Superconductivity brings quantum mechanics to the scale of the everyday world where a single, coherent quantum state may extend over a distance of metres, or even kilometres, depending on the size of a coil or length of superconducting wire. Viable applications of superconductors rely fundamentally on an understanding of this intriguing phenomena and the availability of a range of materials with bespoke properties to meet practical needs. This first volume covers the fundamentals of superconductivity and the various classes of superconducting materials, which sets the context and background for Volumes 2 and 3. Key Features: Covers the depth and breadth of the field Includes contributions from leading academics and industry professionals across the world Provides hands-on guidance to the manufacturing and processing technologies A comprehensive reference, this handbook is suitable for both graduate students and practitioners in experimental physics, materials science and multiple engineering disciplines, including electronic and electrical, chemical, mechanical, metallurgy and others.

Book Description
YBa2Cu3O2 (YBCO) films have been deposited on buffered metal substrates by Metal Organic Chemical Vapor Deposition (MOCVD). Cube-textured nickel substrates were fabricated by a thermomechanical process. Epitaxial CeO2films were deposited on these substrates by thermal evaporation. Nickel alloy substrates with biaxially-textured Yttria-Stabilized Zirconia (YSZ) buffer layers deposited by Ion Beam Assisted Deposition were also prepared. Highly biaxially-textured YBCO films were deposited by MOCVD on both types of metal substrates. A critical current density greater than 105 A/cm2 at 77 K has been achieved in YBCO films on metal substrates.

Book Description
The development of high critical-temperature thin-film superconductors and coated conducting wires is important for electric power applications. To achieve high transport current density, template films are necessary for the successful deposition of biaxially aligned YBa[sub 2]Cu[sub 3]O[sub 7-x] (YBCO) on flexible metal substrates. We grew biaxially aligned magnesium oxide (MgO) template films by ion-beam-assisted deposition with electron-beam evaporation. MgO films of[approx]100[angstrom] thickness were deposited on Si[sub 3]N[sub 4]-coated Si substrates at a deposition rate of[approx]1.5[angstrom]/sec with an ion flux of[approx]110[micro]A/cm[sup 2] bombarding the substrate at a 45[sup o] angle. To study crystalline structure by X-ray diffraction, we deposited an additional layer of MgO. Good in- and out-of-plane alignment was observed, with (111)[phi]-scan full-width half-maximum (FWHM) of 6.2[sup o] and (002)[omega]-scan FWHM of 2.2[sup o].

Book Description
Zr-doped REBa2Cu3O7-x (REBCO and RE = Gd, Y in this thesis) coated conductors fabricated by the Metal Organic Chemical Vapor Deposition (MOCVD) method has demonstrated excellent in-field performance at 77K and a low magnetic field in previous research. However, the most important and promising applications of HTS coated conductors requires excellent in-field performance at various cryogenic temperatures between 77K and 20K, or even lower temperatures, with a high external magnetic field. In this thesis, REBCO coated conductor samples with different Zr contents (0%-15%) fabricated by the MOCVD method were systematically studied in a series of electromagnetic measurements at a wide range of temperatures and fields. Interesting pinning effects of various Zr-doping levels were observed across the temperature and field range. In order to interpret these pinning phenomena, microstructural analysis was done using SEM and TEM methods to reveal the influence of temperature, field and chemical composition on the performance and microstructure of Zr-doped REBCO coated conductors.
