Book Description
C19 diary, correspondence and sermons cast light on the Evangelical movement and its relationship with the Church of England. Between the end of the eighteenth century and the end of the nineteenth evangelicalism came to exercise a profound influence over British religious and social life - an influence unmatched by even the Oxford movement. The four texts published here provide different perspectives on the relationship between evangelicalism and the Church during that time, illustrating the diversity of the tradition. Hannah More's correspondence during the Blagdon controversyilluminates the struggles of Evangelicals at the end of the eighteenth century, as she attempted to establish schools for poor children. The charges of Bishops Ryder and Ryle in 1816 and 1881 respectively reveal the views of Evangelicals who, at either end of the nineteenth century, had a forum for expressing their views from the pinnacle of the church establishment. The major text, the undergraduate diary of Francis Chavasse [1865-8], also written by a future bishop, provides a fascinating insight into the mind of a young Evangelical at Oxford, struggling with his conscience and his calling. Each text is presented with an introduction and notes. Contributors ANDREW ATHERSTONE, MARK SMITH, ANNE STOTT, MARTIN WELLINGS. MARK SMITH teaches at King's College, London; STEPHEN TAYLOR is Reader in Eighteenth Century History, University of Reading.

Book Description
Edward Hicks was called a pro-Boer, a feminist, and three parts a pacifist. Asquith chose him for the bishopric of Lincoln after a long ministry in the slums of Salford and he stood out among the bishops of his time for his radical opinions. He supported the New Liberalism of the turn of the century and was one of the few church leaders who welcomed the rise of the Labour Party. This study traces his life and influence amidst the social and political upheavals of the time.

Book Description
Excerpt from Henry Bazely, the Oxford Evangelist: A Memoir A french author, well known for his brilliant studies of English philosophy and literature, has recorded the following incident of a visit he paid to England about the year Another Sunday, at eight o'clock in the evening, in a university town, I saw two gentlemen and a member of the middle class preaching in the public highway. They do this every Sunday. After a description of the addresses and the preachers, he proceeds: I went off at the end of a quarter of an hour. The audience consisted of about fifty persons, men and women, well-dressed for the most part; at intervals some of them whispered and smiled ironically, but the majority of the men and all the women listened attentively, and appeared to be edified. I heartily approve of these proceedings. In the first place they provide. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
