Book Description
"This research report makes the following claims: 1] There was not an unambiguous economic advantage of hybrid corn over the open-pollinated varieties in 1936. 2] The early adoption of hybrid corn before 1937 can be better explained by a sustained propaganda campaign conducted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture at the direction of the Secretary of Agriculture, Henry Agard Wallace. The Department's campaign echoed that of the commercial seed companies. The most prominent hybrid seed company, Pioneer Hi-Bred Company, was founded by Wallace and he retained a financial interest while serving as Secretary. 3] The early adopters of hybrid seed were followed by later adopters as a consequence of the droughts of 1934 and especially 1936. The eventual improvement of yields as newer varieties were introduced explains the continuation and acceleration of the process"--National Bureau of Economic Research web site

Book Description
"A windbreak, as we generally think of it in Iowa, is a narrow belt of trees planted to give the farmstead protection against winter winds. Much of Iowa's land is relatively level to gently rolling. there is little native timber except along rivers and streams. This combination permits northwesterly winter winds to make a clean sweep across th eland. Something is needed to break their force." -- p. [921]

Book Description
"The Iowa Corn Yield Test is conducted annually to provide impartial comparable performance records on a relatively large number of hybrid combinations. Each hybrid tested is ranked by a performance score based on held, dry matter content of grain, lodging resistance and the percentage of ears held on the stalks. In view of the present world food need, it is important that farmers plant hybrids adapted to their particular locality. The information presented gives a reliable estimate of the relative performance of a considerable number of hybrids when grown in different areas of Iowa." -- p. [865]

Book Description
"Each year the Iowa Farmer has a multitude of corn hybrids from which he can choose seed for planting. Some are well established strains of proven worth while others are new and relatively untried. It is impossible to determine, from the appearance of the seed in the bag, the desirability of any particular hybrid. The real test of its value is determined by planting it along with other hybrids to check its field performance. The Iowa Corn Yield test attempts to provide comparable performance records on a number of hybrids. It is believed that the information presented in this bulletin should afford a reliable comparison of the relative performance of various hybrids when grown in different parts of the state. Data are presented on each entry for yield, stand moisture, root and stalk lodging, ear height, dropped ears and damaged corn. A performance score has been used in evaluating the relative agronomic value of the various hybrids tested." -- p. [473]

"The Iowa Corn Yield Test attempts to make available an impartial evaluation of various hybrid combinations in respect to yielding ability, lodging resistance, maturity and other agronomic characteristics. It is believed that the information presented in this bulletin may be of value to both the purchaser and the producer of hybrid corn seed, showing as it does the relative performance of various hybrids in different parts of the state. Data are presented on each entry for yield, stand, moisture, root and stalk lodging, dropped ears, ear height and damaged corn. A performance score has been used as a means of evaluating relative agronomic value of the different hybrids." -- Purpose, p. [853]
