Book Description
Presented for the first time in English, this volume brings together twelve notable interviews and conversations with Henri Cartier-Bresson carried out between 1951 and 1998. While many of us are acquainted with his images, there are so few texts available by Cartier-Bresson on his photographic process. These verbal, primary accounts capture the spirit of the master photographer and serve as a lasting document of his life and work, which has inspired generations of photographers and artists. Here, Cartier-Bresson speaks passionately, with metaphors and similes, about the world and photography. A man of principles shaped by the evolving eras of the twentieth century, his major influences included Surrealism, European politics of the 1930s and '40s, the Second World War, and his experiences with Magnum as cofounder and reporter. This book illuminates his thoughts, personality, and reflections on a seminal career. In his own words: [Photography] is a way of questioning the world and questioning yourself at the same time. . . . It entails a discipline. For me, freedom is a basic frame of reference, and inside that frame are all the possible variations. Everything, everything, everything. But it is within a frame. The important thing is the sense of limit. And visually, it is the sense of form. Form is important. The structure of things. The space.

Book Description
Six accomplished photographers--Jerry Burchfield, Mark Chamberlain, Jacques Garnier, Rob Johnson, Douglas McCulloh, and Clayton Spada--known as The Legacy Project, aided by 400 artists, experts, and volunteers, transformed an abandoned southern California F-18 jet hangar, located at the Marine Corps Air Station El Toro (MCAS El Toro) in Orange County, into the largest camera ever made and then proceeded to produce the world's largest photograph, The Great Picture. The image is an enormous panoramic landscape of the California desert beyond the air station, which is destined to become the heart of the Orange County Great Park. On July 12, 2006, The Legacy Project unveiled the world's largest photograph at a special reception held inside the world's largest camera. It has been exhibited only twice since then during a short viewing at Art Center College of Design, South Campus Wind Tunnel, Pasadena, California in 2007, and most recently this past winter at Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing, China. However, for the first time, Sweeney Art Gallery/Culver Center's presentation of The Great Picture will be accompanied by additional components that explore details behind its making and those who made it possible. The Legacy Project has shown their work in more than 30 exhibitions in the United States and abroad. The Legacy Project will continue to work through 2017 as El Toro is transformed into the Orange County Great Park. Book Description
Scansion in Psychoanalysis and Art examines a strain of artists spanning more than a century, beginning at the dawn of photography and culminating in the discussion of contemporary artists, to illustrate various psychoanalytic concepts by examining artists working in a multitude of media. Drawing on the theories of Sigmund Freud, who applied psychoanalytic methods to art and literature to decipher the meaning and intention of the creator, as well as Jacques Lacan’s dissemination of scansion as a powerful disruption of narrative, the book explores examples of the long and rich relationship between psychoanalysis and the fine arts. Whilst guiding readers through the different artists and their artforms – from painting and music to poetry, collage, photography, film, performance art, technology and body modification – Sinclair interrogates scansion as a generative process often inherent of the act of creation itself. This is an intriguing book for psychoanalysts, psychologists and creative arts therapists who wish to explore the generative potential of scansion and the relationship between psychoanalysis and the arts, as well as for artists and art historians interested in a psychoanalytic view of these processes.
