The Use of Arabic in Hebrew Biblical Lexicography
Author: John Kaltner
Publisher: Wipf and Stock Publishers
ISBN: 1666786640
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 132
Book Description
One of the common ways biblical scholars attempt to uncover the sense of Hebrew words with unknown meanings, or to propose new meanings for well-attested words, is through appeal to cognate languages. Among the languages used for such purposes none has been more frequently cited than Arabic. This dissertation studies the methodology employed by Hebraists drawing upon the Arabic sources, points out some of the flaws occasionally found in their work, and suggests ways of avoiding such pitfalls in the future.

A Comparative Lexical Study of Qur'ānic Arabic
Author: Martin Zammit
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9047400518
Category : Reference
Languages : en
Pages : 666
Book Description
This work does not aim to be an etymological dictionary of Qur'ānic Arabic, nor does it attempt to suggest some new genetic classification of the Semitic languages. Rather, it offers insights into the internal lexical relationships attested in a number of Semitic varieties. The work is based on a quantitative analysis of a substantial corpus of the Arabic lexicon with a view to investigating lexical relationships within a number of Semitic languages. Qur'ānic Arabic is the source of a lexical mass comparison exercise involving Akkadian, Ugaritic, Aramaic, Syriac, Hebrew, Phoenician, Epigraphic South Arabian and Ge‘ez. Moreover, the lexical links identified in this study are in themselves linguistic indicators of the various degrees of cultural proximity characterising the various Semitic languages.
