The present volume is based on the proceedings of the 6th and 7th INFN ELOISATRON project workshops, held at the Centro di Cultura Scientifica "Et tore Majorana" CCSEM, Erice-Trapani, Sicily, Italy, in the period June 10-27, 1988. The topics of the two workshops were, respectively: - Heavy Flavours: Status and Perspectives, and - Novel Features of High Energy Collisions in 1-100 TeV Region. They were attended by sixty-three physicists. The two workshops were followed by a meeting of the INFN ELOISATRON working group, also held at the CCSEM in the period October 7-15, 1988 in which twenty-five physicists participated. Since there was quite a bit of overlap among speakers, participants and the topics covered at the three meetings, we have decided to issue ajoint proceeding, with the first part entitled: Heavy Flavour Physics, and the second: High Energy Physics with 1-100 Te V Proton Beams. Some of the reports included in this volume have been contributed by the INFN ELOISATRON working group members. The first. part of these proceedings deals mostly with the presentation and inter pretation of results in t.he so-called fiavour physics sector. New results, which have become available in the last three years from experiments involving kaons, charmed and beauty hadrons, and searches for the still missing top quark at the present and fothcoming colliders are topics of major interest. here. The contributions in this part are organized in three categories: Experimental Results, Theoretical Interpretation, and Future Directions.

CP violation was first observed in 1964, but only in 1999 did we gain much greater experimental insight. Direct CP violation finally appeared in the form of ε′/ε in the K system. Indirect CP violation in B → J/Ψ Ks decay, the raison d'être for construction of e+e- B factories, was first sniffed out at the proton-antiproton collider. The asymmetric B factories — BABAR at SLAC and BELLE at KEK — were completed, while the symmetric B factory at Cornell was upgraded to CLEO-III. It seems that everyone is positioning himself for the great competition on “B Physics and CP Violation”, racing to unravel the Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix, especially the size and origin of CP phases. The change of millennium provides a dramatic backdrop.To have intensive discussions at the technical level, to create broader interest in the subject, and to maximize interaction between experimenters and theorists, this book starts with the status of B factories: accelerator, detector and physics analysis. Following an overview of B physics and the CKM matrix, it delves into the details of lifetime, spectroscopy and decays, with even more specialized discussions on rare decays, direct and indirect CP violation, factorization and final state interactions, determination of unitarity phases, etc. Topics on ε′/ε, rare K decay, charm and hyperon systems, and various T, CP and CPT tests are also discussed at length. The book closes with the outlook for hadron machines and the prospects for new physics. A special feature is that there are two summary talks, one on experiment and the other on theory. The 2015 NSAC Long Range Plan recommended EIC as the 'highest priority for new facility construction following the completion of FRIB'. The primary goal of the EIC is to establish precise multi-dimensional imaging of quarks and gluons inside nucleons and nuclei. This includes (i) understanding the spatial and momentum space structure of the nucleon through the studies of TMDs (transverse-momentum-dependent parton distributions), GPD (generalized parton distributions) and the Wigner distribution; (ii) determining the partonic origin of the nucleon spin; (iii) exploring the new quantum chromodynamics (QCD) frontier of ultra-strong gluon fields, with the potential to seal the discovery of a new form of dense gluon matter predicted to exist in all nuclei and nucleons at small Bjorken x — the parton saturation.The program brought together both theorists and experimentalists from Jefferson Lab (JLab), Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) along with the national and international nuclear physics communities to assess and advance the EIC physics.
