Book Description
Definitions of what is meant by a heat-resistant polymer vary considerably. We have taken the term to mean a polymer which can be used, at least for short time periods, at temperatures from 150°C. The greatest problem which arises in writing a monograph on such materials is the tremendous amount of data that is available. More than 2000 references have been published on one heat-resistant polymer system alone over a period of little more than two years. The result is that a very high degree of selectivity must be exercised with respect to the information reproduced. We have chosen to restrict our coverage to polymers that have received at least some degree of commercial exploitation and to details of their methods of preparation, their thermal and thermo-oxidative stabilities and modes of degradation, and their properties at elevated temperatures. It must be emphasized that other properties not cited, e. g. , hydrolytic and chemical stability, and resistance to ultraviolet radiation, may be equally important in particular uses of these materials. The "older" heat-resistant polymers, e. g. , the thermosets and some of the fluorine-containing materials, are not dealt with in such depth as are the "newer" polymers with aromatic and/or heterocyclic rings in the chain. This is because books have been available for some time on the well-established commercial polymers and developments in them have not been as marked re cently as in the aromatic and heterocyclic macromolecules.

The Effect of Long Term Thermal Exposure on Plastics and Elastomers
Author: Laurence W. McKeen
Publisher: William Andrew
ISBN: 0323188931
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 291
Book Description
This reference guide brings together a wide range of essential data on the effect of long term thermal exposure on plastics and elastomers, enabling engineers to make optimal material choices and design decisions. The data is supported by explanations of how to make use of the data in real-world engineering contexts. High heat environments are common in automotive, oil and gas, household appliances, coatings, space and aeronautics and many more end uses. As a result, thermal stability data are critically important to engineers designing parts particularly that replace metals, work that is common today as they look for ways to reduce weight. The data tables in this book enable engineers and scientists to select the right materials for a given product or application across a wide range of sectors. Several polymer classes are covered, including polyolefins, polyamides, polyesters, elastomers, fluoropolymers, biodegradable plastics and more, saving readers the need to contact suppliers. The book also includes introductory sections to provide background on plastic/polymer chemistry and formulation and plastic testing methods, providing the knowledge required to make best use of the data. Essential data and practical guidance for engineers and scientists working with plastics for use in high temperature environments Includes introductory chapters on polymer chemistry and its effect on thermal stability, providing the underpinning knowledge required to utilize the data Covers a wide range of commercial polymer classes, saving readers the need to contact suppliers

Specialty Polymers
Author: R. W. Dyson
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461578949
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 198
Book Description
R. W. DYSON There will be few readers of this book who are not aware of the contribution that polymers make to modern life. They are to be seen around the home, at work, in transport and in leisure pursuits. They take many forms which include plastic mouldings and extrusions, plastic film and sheet, plastic laminates (fibreglass and formica) rubber gloves, hoses, tyres and sealing rings, fibres for textiles and carpets and so on, cellular products for cushioning and thermal insulation, adhesives and coating materials such as paints and varnishes. The majority of these polymers are synthetic and are derived from oil products. The most important of these in terms of tonnage used are polymers based upon styrene, vinyl chloride, ethylene, propylene and butadiene among plastics and rubber materials, and nylons, polyethylenetere phthalate and polyacrylonitrile among fibres. The total amount of these polymers used each year runs into millions of tonnes. These polymers are sometimes known as commodity polymers because they are used for everyday artefacts. They are available in many grades and formats to meet a variety of applications and processing techniques. The and light stabilizers, properties can be adjusted by using additives such as heat plasticizers, and reinforcing materials. Often, grades are specially designed and formulated to meet particular requirements and, in a sense, these might be regarded as specialities. Much has been written about these materials elsewhere and they are not the concern of this book.
