Book Description
People with diabetes want heart-healthy recipes, since heart disease strikes people with diabetes twice as often as the rest of the population. But they also want recipes that taste great. In Diabetes & Heart Healthy Meals for Two, the two largest health associations in America team up to provide recipes that are simple, flavorful, and perfect for people with diabetes who are worried about improving or maintaining their cardiovascular health. A follow-up to Diabetes & Heart Healthy Cookbook, this collaboration from the American Diabetes AssociationĀ® and the American Heart Association focuses on meals with only two servings. Because so many adults with diabetes are older, two-serving meals are perfect for those without children in the houseā€”or even those living alone who want to keep leftovers to a minimum.

Book Description
During the past decade, tremendous growth has occurred in the use of nutrition symbols and rating systems designed to summarize key nutritional aspects and characteristics of food products. These symbols and the systems that underlie them have become known as front-of-package (FOP) nutrition rating systems and symbols, even though the symbols themselves can be found anywhere on the front of a food package or on a retail shelf tag. Though not regulated and inconsistent in format, content, and criteria, FOP systems and symbols have the potential to provide useful guidance to consumers as well as maximize effectiveness. As a result, Congress directed the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to undertake a study with the Institute of Medicine (IOM) to examine and provide recommendations regarding FOP nutrition rating systems and symbols. The study was completed in two phases. Phase I focused primarily on the nutrition criteria underlying FOP systems. Phase II builds on the results of Phase I while focusing on aspects related to consumer understanding and behavior related to the development of a standardized FOP system. Front-of-Package Nutrition Rating Systems and Symbols focuses on Phase II of the study. The report addresses the potential benefits of a single, standardized front-label food guidance system regulated by the Food and Drug Administration, assesses which icons are most effective with consumer audiences, and considers the systems/icons that best promote health and how to maximize their use.

Book Description
The prevalence of childhood obesity is so high in the United States that it may reduce the life expectancy of today's generation of children. While parents and other adult caregivers play a fundamental role in teaching children about healthy behaviors, even the most positive efforts can be undermined by local environments that are poorly suited to supporting healthy behaviors. For example, many communities lack ready sources of healthy food choices, such as supermarkets and grocery stores. Or they may not provide safe places for children to walk or play. In such communities, even the most motivated child or adolescent may find it difficult to act in healthy ways. Local governments-with jurisdiction over many aspects of land use, food marketing, community planning, transportation, health and nutrition programs, and other community issues-are ideally positioned to promote behaviors that will help children and adolescents reach and maintain healthy weights. Local Government Actions to Prevent Childhood Obesity presents a number of recommendations that touch on the vital role of government actions on all levels-federal, state, and local-in childhood obesity prevention. The book offers healthy eating and physical activity strategies for local governments to consider, making it an excellent resource for mayors, managers, commissioners, council members, county board members, and administrators.

Book Description
"Millions of citizens realize that their food choices can help-or hurt-the earth. They want to reduce their 'food footprint,' but with so many decisions to make (omnivore or vegetarian, organic or conventional, local or global), how is a busy person to navigate all the possibilities? The Green Foodprint: Food Choices for Healthy People and a Healthy Planet is a concise, easy-to-read, and practical guide through the new world of healthful food that is also easier on the environment. The book is packed with inspiring facts and stories about how readers can make a big difference with a few wise decisions. Appealing to a wide range of readers and eaters, The Green Foodprint describes five memorable guidelines, and the many healthful, earth-friendly options available within each guideline. Against the background of a flawed industrial food system, the book highlights positive changes and the power of citizens to help themselves, and the earth, with their food choices. Likely audiences include people interested in sustainability, students and educators at all levels from middle school through university, health care providers, nutritionists, people concerned about their health, environmentalists, journalists, foodies, animal lovers, vegetarians, and parents of young children."--Publisher description.

U.S. food production is a $900 billion industry, and each day farming and meat production destroy native habitats; pesticides contaminate groundwater, rivers, and lakes; food processing and delivery contribute to ozone depletion; and food packaging overburdens landfills. Changing the way we eat can we improve the overall health of the planet, and in EATING TO SAVE THE EARTH, Linda Riebel and Ken Jacobsen prove that we can make a difference one meal at a time. In this focused blueprint for action, Riebel and Jacobsen discuss the environmental consequences of meat and fish consumption, the merits of sustainable agriculture and organic foods, and simple methods to reduce waste, conserve water and energy, compost, and recycle. Whether you at home or at work, in restaurants or while camping, every menu choice you make has the potential to create a healthier body, a safer environment, and a balanced ecosystem.
