A Haunted Love Story
Author: Mark Spencer
Publisher: Llewellyn Worldwide
ISBN: 0738731587
Category : Body, Mind & Spirit
Languages : en
Pages : 120
Book Description
When Mark Spencer and his family moved into the beautiful old Allen House in Monticello, Arkansas, they were aware of its notorious reputation for being haunted. According to local lore, the troubled spirit of society belle Ladell Allen, who had mysteriously committed suicide in the master bedroom in 1948, still roamed the grand historic mansion. Yet, Mark remained skeptical—until he and his family began encountering faceless phantoms, a doppelganger spirit, and other paranormal phenomena. Ensuing ghost investigations offered convincing evidence that six spirits, including Ladell, inhabited their home. But the most shocking event occurred the day Mark followed a strange urge to explore the attic and found, crammed under a floorboard, secret love letters that touchingly depict Ladell Allen's forbidden, heart-searing romance—and shed light on her tragic end. This haunting true ghost story includes several photographs of the Allen House.

Love Canal
Author: Richard S. Newman
Publisher: Oxford University Press
ISBN: 0190262842
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 327
Book Description
In the summer of 1978, residents of Love Canal, a suburban development in Niagara Falls, NY, began protesting against the leaking toxic waste dump in their midst-a sixteen-acre site containing 100,000 barrels of chemical waste that anchored their neighborhood. Initially seeking evacuation, area activists soon found that they were engaged in a far larger battle over the meaning of America's industrial past and its environmental future. The Love Canal protest movement inaugurated the era of grassroots environmentalism, spawning new anti-toxics laws and new models of ecological protest. Historian Richard S. Newman examines the Love Canal crisis through the area's broader landscape, detailing the way this ever-contentious region has been used, altered, and understood from the colonial era to the present day. Newman journeys into colonial land use battles between Native Americans and European settlers, 19th-century utopian city planning, the rise of the American chemical industry in the 20th century, the transformation of environmental activism in the 1970s, and the memory of environmental disasters in our own time. In an era of hydrofracking and renewed concern about nuclear waste disposal, Love Canal remains relevant. It is only by starting at the very beginning of the site's environmental history that we can understand the road to a hazardous waste crisis in the 1970s-and to the global environmental justice movement it sparked.

From the Pure Heart

Category : Poetry

Pages : 117
Book Description
Poetry written from a tender young age of discovery and wonder of the world around. This book of poems is based on the young coming of age, the angst and frustrations, and the belief of true love and being in love for the first time. It's about your first heartbreak and the realizations that come with it. These poems are based around the age of innocence and growing up. This book of poetry will take you back to the age of young love with all the heartfelt feelings of wanting to be in love and the crushing devastation of your first breakup. I wrote these poems spanning several years while I was still young, believing in true love, and then suffering heartbreak after heartbreak. There were no blogs or social media to turn to so I put all my feelings into poetry. I am now 63 years old and decided to publish these poems now. For many years I never wanted anyone to read them because I felt they were so deeply personal tome at the time. Well, now I've grown up and my poetry has changed significantly. I will be publishing a second and third book of poems to follow this one. Thank you for taking the time to read this, and I hope you enjoy my book of poetry.

Occasional Deconstructions
Author: Julian Wolfreys
Publisher: State University of New York Press
ISBN: 0791484432
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 382
Book Description
In Occasional Deconstructions, Julian Wolfreys challenges the notion that deconstruction is a critical methodology, offering instead a number of reintroductions or reorientations to the texts of Jacques Derrida and the idea or possibility of deconstructions. Proceeding from specific readings of various texts (both film and literary), as well as mobilizing a number of issues from Derrida's recent work surrounding questions of ethics, politics, and identity, Wolfreys considers the role of deconstruction in broader academic and institutional contexts, and questions whether, in fact, deconstruction can be called upon to function as theory at all. In this book, Wolfreys suggests that the patient, necessary work of reading, in which response and responsibility to the other has a chance to manifest itself, is necessary to the always political and ethical tracing of the material and the historical. He also contends that reading should be an encounter that gives place to an acknowledgment of the other, and that this singular act by which one is introduced to the other can never be programmed.
