Excerpt from The Immortality of the Soul If a man is shut up in a house, the trans patency of the windows is an essential condi tion of his seeing the sky. But it would not be prudent to infer that, if he walked out of the house, he could not see the sky because there was no longer any glass through which he might see it. Book Description
Excerpt from An Immortal Soul: A Novel The deep-sunken earthy lane, just wide enough for the passage of a cart, climbed upwards in zigzags between the pastures and plough lands of the hill. With the wisps of hay and straw caught in the brambles which hung over it, and the primroses which in waver ing lines illuminated the slopes below them, it might have been a little artery wandering into the very heart of Arcadian England. As a matter of fact, it stopped short at a rough gate, which committed the pedestrian to a footpath, and a rising field. The field was studded with gorse-bushes, of which those on the higher levels showed their prickles and their blossoms against the sky. The afternoon sun of a mild March was shining, almost as warm and brilliant as the suns of the South of France, when a well-dressed man, with a brown Tyrolean hat, and a pearl in each of the shirt cufi's which emerged from the Scotch homespun of his sleeves, made his way up the lane, as though he were an exploring stranger. During the 'course of his leisurely ascent, however, though the quarter Of the sky facing him was still clear and cloudless, he noticed that a curious dimness was creeping over the Objects round him, and he presently looked back to discover the cause of so abrupt a change. Book Description
Excerpt from Questions Awakened by the Bible: I. Are Souls Immortal?; II. Was Christ in Adam?; III. Is God a Trinity? There are two questions: Will the soul be im mortal? And, Is the soul immortal now? To say The Soul not Immortal, would needlessly jar upon the former. The immortality of the soul is one of our sweetest confidences. All the ecstasies of faith are wrapped up in the very expression. It has grown hallowed. And though The Soul not Im mortal is really the correct title for the belief that it dies between death and judgment, yet we must really not turn faith too suddenly even out of a heathen temple. Our doctrine is, that man dies at death that the body is mortal, and that the soul is mortal: that the body will live again, and that the soul will live again: that the body will live forever, and that the soul will live forever: and therefore. Book Description
Excerpt from The Immortality of the Human Soul: Philosophically Explained It is an acknowledged fact that the question of the soul's immortality is fraught with con sequences for this reason the advocates of the several philosophical systems have ever plied their minds with it, and it is especially from the position they take in regard to this question that the correctness or falsity of their views are brought to light according as they establish the belief in a future life, or contradict it. Book Description
Excerpt from Immortality of the Soul As we peer into the starry depths on a clear night, when the noise of the day has softened into an impressive silence, undis turbed, our Vision penetrates to stars that retreat into mere points of light. The telescope is brought to our aid and there is revealed to us innumerable stars'far beyond the reach of the naked eye. We have no means of determining the distance to which the stars may extend in space beyond those within the field of view of the most powerful telescope. We are in the habit of placing boundaries to all existences that come within' the scope of our mental operations. We place limitations on all existences that come to occupy a place in space and time. We are aware of the limit of space, _in which the human body is con fined and the extent of its activities on earth. We are certain of the limited time allotted to the organized body in its career on earth. We are certain that the earth is limited in space and time. We do not doubt that there are regions in space, beyond the reach of the Sun's light. Although we can not escape the conscious conviction of the existences that are limited in space and duration, yet our minds are capable of apprehending that which does not admit of limitation. We can not get away from the truth that space is boundless and that we can form no con ception of the limits of its extension. How are our minds brought in touch with infinite space? What is that entity which we call infinite space? We can not apply our knowledge of mathematics, science and philosophy in demonstrating or prov ing infinite space. How then is the mind made certain that there is that which we call infinite space? We trace back the years of our lives and the entire line of our ancestors until we reach the first man. Our marvelous minds continue to revert still farther back into duration, through the ages that preceded man, until we enter into the thought of a duration that had no beginning. We are now convinced of the eternity that knows no beginning. What is time? What is eternity? We look about for the proof of this mysterious eternity, and we find that our mathematics, our smence and our philosophy can not fathom it. How are we brought to a recognition of infinite space and the eternity of duration? These truths are revealed to us by that indwelling power of the mind that was created in us, and which we call intuition. Book Description
Excerpt from The Immortality of the Soul and the Final Condition of the Wicked Carefully Considered It was remarked by the learned editor of the Presbyte rian, (the Rev. Dr. Engles, ) in his notice of my work on the Resurrection, that perhaps it was a defect that the author, in treating the subject, was too anxious to demolish every part of the theory of Professor Bush. This may have been so. But though the judicious suggestion has been constantly in mind during the preparation of the present tractate, the appearance of being too particular in meeting the recent assaults on the doctrine of immortality could not' well be avoided. The theme, in its far-reaching relations, to theology, philosophy, tradition, and Scripture exegesis, is most extensive. The writers to whom I reply, moreover, are very numerous, and taken collectively have, in one way or another, traversed the whole field of argu ment, pressing their assaults with great zeal and earnestness, and their writings are widely disseminated both in this country and Great Britain, and have made a deep impres sion on multitudes of minds. Book Description
Excerpt from The Immortality of the Soul: Considered in the Light of the Holy Scriptures, the Testimony of Reason and Nature, and the Various Phenomena of Life and Death And yet, let it be distinctly understood, that the following chapters are not sermons. With the exception of the last two or three, no one would suspect from their form or style that their author was a clergyman, or that the matter of the book had ever been embodied in pulpit discourses. Every para graph has been rewritten; and, so far as we are aware, not a trace of their former sermonic aspect remains.
