When saying 'I do' to the love of her life, it didn't matter to Marie that Scott had been married before. But four years later, it's a different story. These days, Marie feels as though Scott sees more of his first wife and their children than he does of her and their energetic toddler. Now she's setting out to find his ex and prove that she's a decent person who can be trusted with the children. But there's a slight catch: Scott's asked her to let him handle it, so she'll need to be discreet. Kathleen is the Queen of comic fiction!' Nancy Peach, author of The Mother of all Problems 'Kathleen Whyman has done an amazing job of writing a funny, poignant look into modern relationships. The story had me gripped right up until the end. Highly recommend' Julia Boggio, author of Shooters 'A fun light-hearted romping read that had me laughing so hard!' Reader review, 5 stars 'Absolutely loved this book and was gutted when I'd finished it as it was so brilliant!' Reader review, 5 stars 'A blast, dripping with wit and humour' Caroline Khoury, author of It Must Be Love 'I absolutely LOVED this one. There were fascinating layers, family relationships, romantic relationships, laughs and unexpected happenings. The fact that I read this book quickly (for me, I'm a slow reader) speaks volumes as to how very much I enjoyed it. My favourite book ... for sure and definitely a 5* read from me' Reader review, 5 stars

Pages : 373
Book Description
Three women, five kids, one house—there’s going to be a lot of dirty laundry . . . “A darkly funny and very readable tale.”—Stylist We’ve got the balance all wrong. Instead of living with our partners, struggling to do everything by ourselves and only seeing each other now and then, we should do it the other way round. We should live together and see them now and then . . . Erica knows her suggestion sounds extreme, but when her nanny leaves without notice, she’s extremely desperate. Polly and Louise aren’t convinced, but when circumstances force them to move into Polly’s enormous but rundown house, they have to admit that life’s much easier when the childcare and workload is shared. At first, communal living seems like the answer to all their prayers—childcare on tap, rotas for cleaning, and someone always available to cook dinner. No more last-minute pizza delivery! But over time, resentment starts to grow as they judge each other’s parenting styles and bicker over everything down to whose turn it is to buy toilet paper. And as one woman has her head turned by a handsome colleague, one resorts to spying on her husband, and another fights to keep a dark secret, they need each other more than ever. But can Polly, Louise and Erica keep their friendship and relationships strong? Or will their perfect mumtopia fall apart? “A laugh-out-loud emotional rollercoaster with friendship at its wonderful core.” —Zoë Folbigg, bestselling author of The Note “I raced through Wife Support System . . . Well-written, funny, heartwarming and lovely.” —Lucy Vine, author of Hot Mess “Hilarious and fun, tense and poignant. All of the emotions! I loved it from start to finish.” —Catherine Bennetto, author of How Not to Fall in Love Actually

ISBN: 9781419623172
Category : Humor

Pages : 254
Book Description
Has Anyone Seen My Reading Glasses? offers a unique and fresh approach to the subject of Baby Boomer retirement. First, it's written by a Baby Boomer who is actually retired. Second, the book is long on humor and personal anecdotes, and short on statistical analysis. In the book, Pat covers topics that are not normally seen in the table of contents of most retirement books, such as Timesharing, Cruising, and the Women's perspective of Baby Boomer retirement. No matter how serious the subject matter, like Financial Strategy, or Long Term Care Insurance, Pat's goal is to simultaneously educate and entertain his audience.

Fed Up
Author: Gemma Hartley
Publisher: HarperCollins
ISBN: 0062856480
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 283
Book Description
A bold dive into the emotional labor women have shouldered for far too long—and an impassioned vision for creating a better future for us all. Day in, day out, women anticipate and manage the needs of others. In relationships, we initiate the hard conversations. At home, we shoulder the mental load required to keep our households running. At work, we moderate our tone, explaining patiently and speaking softly. In the world, we step gingerly to keep ourselves safe. We do this largely invisible, draining work whether we want to or not—and we never clock out. No wonder women everywhere are overtaxed, exhausted, and simply fed up. In her ultra-viral article “Women Aren’t Nags—We’re Just Fed Up,” shared by millions of readers, Gemma Hartley gave much-needed voice to the frustration and anger experienced by countless women. Now, in Fed Up, Hartley expands outward from the everyday frustrations of performing thankless emotional labor to illuminate how the expectation to do this work in all arenas—private and public—fuels gender inequality, limits our opportunities, steals our time, and adversely affects the quality of our lives. More than just name the problem, though, Hartley teases apart the cultural messaging that has led us here and asks how we can shift the load. Rejecting easy solutions that don’t ultimately move the needle, Hartley offers a nuanced, insightful guide to striking real balance, for true partnership in every aspect of our lives. Reframing emotional labor not as a problem to be overcome, but as a genderless virtue men and women can all learn to channel in our quest to make a better, more egalitarian world, Fed Up is surprising, intelligent, and empathetic essential reading for every woman who has had enough with feeling fed up.

A Ladder to the Sky
Author: John Boyne
Publisher: Hogarth
ISBN: 1984823035
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 341
Book Description
“A satire of writerly ambition wrapped in a psychological thriller . . . An homage to Patricia Highsmith, Oscar Wilde and Edgar Allan Poe, but its execution is entirely Boyne’s own.”—Ron Charles, The Washington Post NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY THE WASHINGTON POST AND MINNEAPOLIS STAR TRIBUNE Maurice Swift is handsome, charming, and hungry for fame. The one thing he doesn’t have is talent—but he’s not about to let a detail like that stand in his way. After all, a would-be writer can find stories anywhere. They don’t need to be his own. Working as a waiter in a West Berlin hotel in 1988, Maurice engineers the perfect opportunity: a chance encounter with celebrated novelist Erich Ackermann. He quickly ingratiates himself with the powerful – but desperately lonely – older man, teasing out of Erich a terrible, long-held secret about his activities during the war. Perfect material for Maurice’s first novel. Once Maurice has had a taste of literary fame, he knows he can stop at nothing in pursuit of that high. Moving from the Amalfi Coast, where he matches wits with Gore Vidal, to Manhattan and London, Maurice hones his talent for deceit and manipulation, preying on the talented and vulnerable in his cold-blooded climb to the top. But the higher he climbs, the further he has to fall. . . . Sweeping across the late twentieth century, A Ladder to the Sky is a fascinating portrait of a relentlessly immoral man, a tour de force of storytelling, and the next great novel from an acclaimed literary virtuoso. Praise for A Ladder to the Sky “Boyne's mastery of perspective, last seen in The Heart's Invisible Furies, works beautifully here. . . . Boyne understands that it's far more interesting and satisfying for a reader to see that narcissist in action than to be told a catchall phrase. Each step Maurice Swift takes skyward reveals a new layer of calumny he's willing to engage in, and the desperation behind it . . . so dark it seems almost impossible to enjoy reading A Ladder to the Sky as much as you definitely will enjoy reading it.”—NPR “Delicious . . . spins out over several decades with thrilling unpredictability, following Maurice as he masters the art of co-opting the stories of others in increasingly dubious ways. And while the book reads as a thriller with a body count that would make Highsmith proud, it is also an exploration of morality and art: Where is the line between inspiration and thievery? To whom does a story belong?”—Vanity Fair

Have You Seen My Brother?
Author: Margie Cretella
Publisher: Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.
ISBN:
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 224
Book Description
Imagine these words: black ice, a car, a truck, a tree, and Northeast Ohio. These words can only add up to a tragic car crash. And they did! The nightmare happened on November 13, 2013, and left me on a journey searching for my brother and God. It seemed like a game that I didn't want to partake in, but I had no choice. This game led me to several hospitals where I spent my time asking the hospital staff if they knew where my brother was. They always led me to a room of an almost lifeless man lying in a bed and often looking at me like he was wondering who I was. Where exactly was my brother, the loud, boisterous man that I once knew for fifty-eight years? He was the man that you would hear before you would even see him. I wanted that brother back and wanted him back immediately! I spent ten years searching for my brother and God. It left me exhausted, mad, bitter, and at times, lonely. How would I go about finding them? I would have been happy if I could just find one of them, but who would be more important to me, my brother or God? I couldn't imagine God turning his back on my brother Father Steve, a devout Catholic priest, because I could only envision God taking care of him every step of the way. Would I be fortunate enough to find out that maybe God and my brother were hanging out the whole time searching for me? Maybe I was the one who was lost! If you like stories about faith, family, love, and willpower then this book is for you!

From Buchenwald to Carnegie Hall
Author: Marian Filar
Publisher: Univ. Press of Mississippi
ISBN: 1628468750
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 283
Book Description
Before the Nazis sent members of the Filar family to Treblinka, these were the last words Marian Filar's mother said to him: “I bless you. You'll survive this horror. You'll become a great pianist, and I'll be very proud of you.” Born in 1917 into a musical Jewish family in Warsaw, Filar began playing the piano when he was four. He performed his first public concert at the age of six. At twelve he played with the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra and went on to study with the great Polish pianist and teacher Zbigniew Drzewiecki at the State Conservatory of Music. After the German invasion, Filar fled to Lemberg (Lvov), where he continued his music studies until 1941, when he returned to his family in the Warsaw Ghetto. The Nazis killed his parents, a sister, and a brother, but he and his brother Joel survived as workers on the German railroad. After taking part in the Warsaw Ghetto uprising, Marian and Joel were captured and sent to Majdanek, Buchenwald, and other concentration camps. After liberation Filar was able to resume his career by studying with the renowned German pianist Walter Gieseking. In 1950 he immigrated to the United States and soon after was performing concerts with Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra. He made his Carnegie Hall debut on New Year's Day, 1952. He became head of the piano department at the Settlement Music School in Philadelphia and later a professor of music at Temple University, while continuing to perform in Europe, South America, Israel, and the United States. Filar does not end his story with liberation but with the fulfillment of his mother's blessing. Without rancor or bitterness, his memoir comes full circle, ending where it began—in Warsaw. In 1992 Filar traveled to Poland to visit the school next to what had once been the Umschlagplatz, the place from which Jews had been sent to Treblinka and where he said farewell to the mother who blessed him.

Behind the Man Behind the Badge
Author: Bev Brannon
Publisher: Author House
ISBN: 1452018634
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 134
Book Description
"Behind the Man Behind the Badge" is a collection of short stories recounting what I did as the wife of a Special Agent in the Naval Criminal Investigative Service. Or, as the world knows it today---NCIS. A special agent's job is not only very demanding but at times the cases are extremely sensitive and secretive. So, as a wife living in this environment, I had to find my own way in each new country where we were assigned. Since, NCIS is attached to various military offices in each country, many of the stories involve activities with both American and foreign military personnel. I also explain how I had to adjust to military life as a civilian, one who had never been exposed to military life before. When my husband retired and we finally returned to the United States, friends and relatives would listen to my husband's intriguing tales of adventure. Then invariably they would turn to me and say, "And what did you do?" Occasionally, I would have the chance to tell one of my favorite stories. But before long they were eagerly asking my husband to tell them another story of intrigue. My own tales of intrigue, though none of them are super-secret types, cover---The Week I Went to War, To Sir With Love, My Nights in the Brothel, One for the Grinch, Modern Conveniences, Titillating Tidbits---just to name a few. The stories are written with subtle humor, compassion, and honesty, and relate my adventures of living in foreign countries. So, now, this is my way of telling what it was really like, "Behind the Man Behind the Badge."
