Hans Christian Andersen (1805 – 1875) was a Danish poet and author celebrated for his children’s stories but perhaps best known for his fables and fairy tales – meant for both adults and children. They were frequently written in a colloquial style, using idioms and spoke language in a manner previously unseen in Danish literature. Though simple at first glance, Hans Andersen Fairy Tales often convey sophisticated moral teachings, in equal measure heart-breaking and heart-warming. These tales are further enhanced by the wonderful watercolour illustrations of A. Duncan Carse - a lesser known though immensely accomplished artist and Golden Age illustrator. Andreas Duncan Carse (1876 - 1938) provided the illustrations for Lucy M. About the Illustrator: Anne Anderson (1874-c.1940) was a Scottish illustrator chiefly noted for her Art Nouveau children's book illustrations that display fluidity typical of the movement. Andersen explained the source of the story as being an incident he had witnessed as a small child. His father, he stated, had been sent a piece of red silk by a rich lady, who wanted the material converted into a pair of dancing slippers. Andersen’s father produced the slippers, but the rich woman was horrified at the result, and in reaction to her harsh criticism, he cut the shoes up in front of her.
