Book Description
This book could not have been conceptualized or published 20 years ago. Indeed, it is doubtful that we could have organized the material for this handbook 10 years ago. Over the last 20 years, however, the painstaking efforts of many clinical researchers working with a variety of resistive psychopathologies have resulted in specific psychotherapies and pharmacotherapies that are effective with a significant propor tion of patients, at least for some of the disorders. Much clinical research remains to be carried out in the forthcoming decades. But now that we are nearing the 21st century, at least some statement about efficacy can be made. In 1967, Gordon Paul succinctly stated that the ultimate goal of treatment outcome research is to determine "What treatment, by whom, is most effective for this individual with that specific problem, and under which set of circumstances" (p. 111). At that time, empirical evaluations of psychosocial and pharmacologic treatments were few and far between. Methodological strategies for determining treatment effectiveness were also in the formative stage, as exemplified by introduc tion of control groups that received inactive interventions (i. e. , placebo) and the relatively recent practice of comparing two or more treatments in addition to placebo. In the almost three decades since Paul's oft-quoted dictum, both the quantity and the quality of treatment outcome research with adults have increased dramati cally.

Book Description
"Emanating from a strong scientific and empirical foundation, this updated Second Edition focuses on commonly occurring psychiatric and psychological disorders in children and adolescents. In this new edition, leading experts share research findings and clinical experiences and present in-depth discussions on how to address common impediments to successful intervention in the real world. Accordingly, the authors talk not just about "first line" interventions, but also about secondary and tertiary treatments should initial efforts be unsuccessful."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Description
This handbook shows the wide perspective cognitive-behavioural treatment can offer to health professionals, the vast majority of whom now recognize that cognitive behavioural procedures are very useful in treating many 'mental' disorders, even if certain disciplines continue to favour other kinds of treatment. This book offers a wide range of structured programmes for the treatment of various psychological/psychiatric disorders as classified by the DSM-IV. The layout will be familiar to the majority of health professionals in the description of mental disorders and their later treatment. It is divided into seven sections, covering anxiety disorders, sexual disorders, dissociative, somatoform, impulse control disorders, emotional disorders and psychotic and organic disorders. Throughout the twenty-three chapters, this book offers the health professional a structured guide with which to start tackling a whole series of 'mental' disorders and offers pointers as to where to find more detailed information. The programmes outlined should, it is hoped, prove more effective than previous approaches with lower economic costs and time investment for the patient and therapist.

Book Description
In today's era of managed behavioral health care, mental health professionals are called upon to consult on medication treatment or recommend what medications would best serve as adjuncts to therapy. Medically trained or not, all mental health professionals need to know as much as possible about psychopharmacologic medications from dosage and side effects to drug-drug interactions and other special considerations in order to provide effective and accountable treatment. The first-ever handbook of its kind, Psychopharmacology Handbook for the Non-Medically Trained fills a noticeable gap in most student training programs by providing a reader-friendly and accessible overview of the role of drugs in mental health treatment. Emphasizing the importance of making medications available to consumers in conjunction with the most effective and efficient counseling interventions, Dziegielewski establishes the context for the therapeutic use of psychotropic drugs in the culture of today ís mental health treatments, examines the danger of the "quick fix" mentality into which consumers and clinicians are tempted to fall, and then focuses on the medications themselves. One of the most prominent and authoritative social work academics today, Dziegielewski is an authority on the topic of psychopharmacology in social work practice. The recipient of numerous honors and awards for her teaching, the creator of a popular preparation course for social work licensure, and the author of over 95 publications, she is a source to which students and professionals turn for up-to-date, accurate information on a variety of topics in the social work field. Psychopharmacology Handbook for the Non-Medically Trained is an invaluable resource guide for all non-medically trained practitioners, providing therapists, social workers, and other counselors, with effective tools and critical information to help them become better informed about all courses of mental health treatment for their clients.

Book Description
With the publication of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition (DSM-5), much has changed about the conceptualization of obsessive-compulsive disorder and its associated spectrum conditions. Breaking free from the previous category of anxiety disorders, a new diagnostic category of "obsessive-compulsive and related disorders" (ORCDs) has emerged. This new categorization has provided an opportunity to enhance our understanding of these unique disorders and to address new research questions. The second edition of The Oxford Handbook of Obsessive-Compulsive and Related Disorders presents the latest information, from leaders in the field about the epidemiology, phenomenology, assessment, and treatment of ORCDs. The volume begins by reviewing the prevalence and profiles of obsessive-compulsive disorder, body dysmorphic disorder, hoarding disorder, trichotillomania (hair-pulling disorder), and excoriation (skin-picking) disorder. Chapter authors then discuss modern conceptualizations of the OCRDs, including neurocircuitry, genetic, behavioral, and cognitive models. From here, assessment strategies are reviewed, followed by state-of-the-science biological and psychological treatments, including pharmacotherapy, neurosurgical strategies, behavioral therapies, and cognitive therapies. Finally, the volume examines the presentation and treatment of OCRDs across cultures as well as in special populations including children and older adults.

Book Description
Oxford Handbooks offer authoritative and up-to-date reviews of original research in a particular subject area. Specially commissioned chapters from leading figures in the discipline give critical examinations of the progress and direction of debates, as well as a foundation for future research. Oxford Handbooks provide scholars and graduate students with compelling new perspectives upon a wide range of subjects in the humanities, social sciences, and sciences. As one of psychology's oldest fields, personality assessment is one of the most extensively studied subsets of contemporary psychology. The Oxford Handbook of Personality Assessment synthesizes new and existing literature with clinical practice to provide a comprehensive volume on contemporary personality assessment, including its historical developments, underlying methods, applications, contemporary issues, and assessment techniques. This handbook, part of the Oxford Library of Psychology, addresses both the historical roots of personality assessment and the evolution of its contemporary methodological tenets, thus providing a foundation for the handbook's other innovative focus: the application of personality assessment in clinical, personnel, and forensic assessments. With a wealth of respected international contributors and unequalled breadth of content, the Oxford Handbook of Personality Assessment offers an authoritative and field-encompassing resource for researchers and clinicians from across the medical health and psychology disciplines (i.e., clinical psychology, psychiatry, and social work) and would be an ideal text for any graduate course on the topic of personality assessment.
