Book Description
Excerpt from Guidelines for the Preparation of Bibliographies When arrangement is alphabetical, it is usually by authors' last names. A single-author citation is placed before a multiple-author citation. The last names of junior authors may be used to alphabetize entries when there is a senior author of different articles having various joint authorships. Initials used for given names precede names that are Spelled out unless both versions are known to refer to the same author in which case only one form should be used. In the case of several articles by the same author, or by the same joint authorship, secondary filing is by the first word of the title not an article. Excerpt from Notes for the Guidance of Authors: On the Preparation of Manuscripts, on the Reading of Proofs, and on Dealing With Publishers "An honest Stationer (or Publisher) is he, that exercizeth his Mystery (vvhether it be in printing, bynding or selling of Bookes) vvith more respect to the glory of God & the publike aduantage than to his ovvne Commodity & is both an ornament & a profitable member in the ciuill Commonvvealth... If he be a Printer he makes conscience to exempelfy his Coppy fayrely & truly. If he be a Booke-bynder, he is no meere Bookseller (that is) one vvho aduantage only: but he is a Chapman of Arts, of vvifdome, & of much experience for a little money... The reputation of Schollers is a deare unto him as his ovvne: For, he acknovvledgeth that from them his Mystery had both begining and means of continuance. He heartely loues & seekes the Prosperity of his ovvne Corporation: Yet he vvould not iniure the Uniuersityes to aduantage it. Book Description
Excerpt from Guide to the Study and Use of Reference Books: A Manual for Librarians, Teachers and Students Besides cyclopedias and dictionaries which give direct aid, the reader will have to consult more elaborate treatises for further information. Bibliographies are guides to these. A know ledge of bibliography, therefore, forms an important part in the preparation of the student. The most useful reference department will include bibliographies of special subjects along with the cyclopedias of those subjects. It is to be regretted that books belonging to the class Bibliography are as a rule kept in the cataloger's room or the librarian's office, not in the reference department where they would be useful to the public. In a large library, such an important printed catalog as that of the Peabody Institute Library should by all means he kept where the public can have easy access to it, even if it is necessary to duplicate such a work. This manual will also serve as a guide in the selection of reference books for a library. The prices given are the publishers' prices, and the lowest price is usually quoted. Books can often be obtained at a discount or picked up from time to time at auction or second-hand stores at a much reduced price. Reference books are expensive, and few libraries can afford to keep up with new editions or even with recent authorities. In many cases new editions are not worth the cost. They are frequently made from the same plates as the earlier editions, with slight alterations, not of sufficient importance to warrant the expense involved in their purchase. A suggestive list of one hundred reference books for a small library will be found at the end of the volume. Book Description
Excerpt from The Bibliographic Style of the American Medical Association Press The following extract from the Style-Book of the American Medical Association Press is here printed for the convenience of authors and as an aid toward uniformity and accuracy in style, especially in bibliographic work. The fact that this pamphlet is to be circulated among authors justifies the inclusion here of (A) some general remarks on the preparation of manuscripts, and (B) some publishers' rules concerning proof, reprints and exclusive publication. A. Manuscript Preparation 1. Manuscripts should be typewritten, well spaced between the lines and with ample margins. Lines should not be close-spaced for case reports or for any other matter. This point is of great importance, since the manuscript editors need to place some directions to the printer on the margin, and others between the lines of the manuscript. In some instances it may be impossible to prepare a close-spaced manuscript for the printer. Illegibility, close spacing, or other mechanical defects in the preparation of a manuscript - as well as errors in spelling, grammar and diction - may sometimes turn the scale against the acceptance of an article. Manuscripts should not be rolled, and preferably not folded, and. we repeat for emphasis, not closely written. 2. The ambiguous and inconsistent use of pronouns should be avoided. Sometimes an author will refer to himself in one place as "the writer," in another as "the author," in a third as "I," and in still another as "we." He may then go on to use the pronoun "we" with reference to the medical profession or the world at large. Book Description
Excerpt from Library Cataloguing Some years ago I prepared a Manual of Library Cataloguing, which met with more acceptance than was expected, and has been out of print for some time. Upon considering requests for a new edition, I concluded that a book upon somewhat different lines would be more likely to meet the present requirements of librarians and library assistants this volume is the result. No pretence is made that the work is exhaustive or complete, but it is hoped that it will serve as a practical and useful introduction to the several codes of cataloguing rules. The statements made in it are not meant to be dogmatic, but they indicate the lines upon which good and accurate work is to be accomplished As the illustrative examples were chosen from every-day books, and are worked out as simply as possible, they should be found useful by beginners; especially in preparing for the examinations of the Library Association in this subject.
