Based on surveys of agricultural properties owned by the California State Dept. of Parks and Recreation (DPR) largely falling into one of three property types -- dairy farms and facilities, sheep ranches, and early-diversified farms and ranches -- historical research was conducted to obtain descriptions of material culture and contexts for their evaluation. Guidelines were developed for identifying and recording historic agricultural properties, and determining their significance according to evaluation crieteria based on the Criteria for Evaluation of National Register of Historic Places that were tailored to address rural historic landscapes. The guidelines and criteria were then applied to three park units within the survey landscapes. Results were recorded on DPR Historic Resource Inventory forms (DPR523).

The analysis section provides a concise discussion of the property's historic significance according to the National Register criteria, and an evaluation of the landscape characteristics and associated features that contribute to that significance. The analysis incorporates concepts from National Register Bulletin 30: Guidelines for Evaluating and Documenting Rural Historic Landscapes. All preservation, restoration, rehabilitation, or reconstruction treatment recommendations conform to the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Historic Preservation, and the Guidelines for the Treatment of Historic Landscapes.
