Book Description
"The habitat preferences of Lake Sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens) were compared by literature review of 24 study areas across three major North American watersheds in five categories: depth, substrate, current, home range size and preferred prey items. Comparisons focused on differences in adult and juvenile habitat preferences. Patterns and trends were used to test evidence of a size structure in spatial distribution by life stage. Juveniles are encountered in deeper water more often than adults are. Both adults and juveniles exhibit similar prey and substrate preferences. Adults and juveniles both prefer areas with low to medium current velocities with some evidence that adults prefer slightly higher currents. Home ranges of adults are much greater than home ranges of juveniles. These patterns are confounded by the wide variation in preferences in all categories for both adults and juveniles. Studies comparing both adults and juveniles in the same area provide stronger support for size structured separation in Lake Sturgeon. These types of studies are most effective for illustrating site-specific variation in habitat use, as well as adult and juvenile habitat differences."-- abstract.

Book Description
"Raising lake sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens) in hatcheries is an important tool for rehabilitation and conservation, but is expensive. When hatchery sturgeon do not grow large enough before stocking, their odds of survival decline significantly and resources are wasted. We investigated the potential limiting effect of large lake sturgeon on the growth rate of smaller conspecifics housed in the same tank, and the possibility of increasing growth rates by separating individuals into different size classes. We also examined plasma cortisol levels of the different size classes over time as an indicator of stress levels, and levels of free plasma thyroid hormones triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4). A single family of lake sturgeon (one male/female cross) was raised in the Northern Michigan University Aquatics laboratory for one year. Growth of the sturgeon was determined both as group averages and for individuals. Separating lake sturgeon by size group had no discernable effect on average growth rates in any of the size categories, but individuals within size groups did show increased growth rates. All three categories ended the experiment with broadened size distributions. Cortisol levels showed no consistent differences based on size (Cortisol [pg/mL ± SE] =229.27 ± 11.21). Plasma thyroid hormone levels were also similar between size categories (T3 [pg/mL ± SE] =8.53 ± 0.26; T4=0.86 ± 0.04). Separation of lake sturgeon by size category does not appear to increase their average growth rates in captivity, but all size groups continued to increase in size throughout the experiment."--Abstract.

Book Description
Hatchery supplementation of declining fish populations is often used as part of population enhancement and recovery programs. However, fish produced from the sterile hatchery environment often develop maladaptive behavioural phenotypes that can result in high post-release mortality. Lake Sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens) are reared in hatcheries for conservation purposes, yet little is known of their early life behaviour. Here, I investigate the influence of body size on resource holding potential (RHP) and boldness, and the potential for predator conditioning to influence risk assessment and the physiology of juvenile Lake Sturgeon. Results indicate condition factor, rather than body size, increases RHP and bold responses in juvenile Lake Sturgeon. Additionally, conditioning did not influence risk assessment behaviour. However, foraging remained paramount, and chronic conditioning had an effect on whole body cortisol concentrations, suggesting a sensitive stress response. These results indicate the complex early life behaviour of juvenile Lake Sturgeon, both behaviourally and physiologically.

Book Description
We conceived the idea for this book after teaching a graduate seminar on 'Habitat Complexity' at The University of South Florida. Discussions during the seminar led us to conclude that similar goals were to be found in studies of the topic that spanned the breadth of ecological research. Yet, the exact meaning of 'habitat structure', and the way in which it was measured, seemed to differ widely among subdisciplines. Our own research, which involves several sorts of ecology, convinced us that the differences among subdisciplines were indeed real ones, and that they did inhibit communica tion. We decided that interchange of ideas among researchers working in marine ecology, plant-animal interactions, physiological ecology, and other more-or-less independent fields would be worthwhile, in that it might lead to useful generalizations about 'habitat structure'. To foster this interchange of ideas. we organized a symposium to attract researchers working with a wide variety of organisms living in many habitats, but united in their interest in the topic of 'habitat structure'. The symposium was held at The University of South Florida's Chinsegut Hill Conference Center, in May. 1988. We asked participants to think about 'habitat structure' in new ways; to synthesize important, but fragmented, information; and. perhaps. to consider ways of translating ideas across systems. The chapters contained in this book reflect the participants' attempts to do so. The book is divided into four parts, by major themes that we have found useful categorizations.
