Book Description
Although he was a native of Bullock County, Alabama, Wade Hall -- teacher, writer, poet, critic, interviewer, folklorist, and documentarian -- spent most of his fifty-year career in Kentucky. But he was never emotionally far from his home as evidenced by his passion for collecting vintage Alabama postcards. In his lifetime he amassed 10,000, which he then graciously gave to the University of Alabama Libraries and Troy University in a large joint bequest that also included rare books, quilts, folk art, letters and more. These postcards date from the late 1800s to the mid-20th century and offer a fascinating and diverse picture of the state. The meaning of postcards that could be purchased as a travel souvenir is largely forgotten today when cameras are commonplace. But the value of Hall's stunning collection cannot be missed. The some 400 cards featured in Greetings from Alabama are revealing of scenes familiar and rare. From Birmingham's Vulcan to Mobile's Bellingrath Gardens, from Enterprise's boll weevil monument to Huntsville's rockets, from Helen Keller's home to William Rufus King's resting place, the scenes offer captivating glimpses of Alabama history.

Morristown
Author: Bonnie-Lynn Nadzeika
Publisher: Arcadia Publishing
ISBN: 0738592803
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 130
Book Description
The seat of Morris County, Morristown began as a small rural settlement centered around a common green. The small village soon earned its place in American history when George Washington chose to make Morristown the site of his headquarters twice during the Revolutionary War. Just a few decades later, history was made again when Samuel Morse made Alfred Vail his partner in developing the telegraph at Speedwell Iron Works in Morristown. The town continued to grow as successive immigrant groups created ethnic enclaves. The Gilded Age came to Morristown, and by 1900, dozens of millionaires called the community home and brought the trappings of wealth, from lavish homes to social clubs. Today, while Morristown continues to evolve, numerous historic sites and museums document its rich past.

Vik Muniz: Postcards from Nowhere
Author:
Publisher: Aperture Direct
ISBN: 9781683952176

Languages : en
Pages : 34
Book Description
Not so long ago, it was relatively easy to wake up overlooking Victoria Harbour in Hong Kong and go to sleep in the shadow of the Brooklyn Bridge; to travel from Venice to Istanbul in time for dinner. The international network of the art world, in particular, made it easy to slip through time and borders--with the right invitation and the right passport. You may never have been to Basel, Switzerland for the art fairs, but you might certainly feel as though you have, experiencing it exclusively through the spate of other people's images. Vik Muniz's series Postcards from Nowhere grapples with how, through photographs, we have come to "see" and understand distant yet iconic sites we may never actually view with our own eyes. "The images we hold in our heads are an assemblage," notes Muniz. "They are an amalgam of every image of those locations that we have ever seen." More critically, the series serves as an homage not just to the quasi-obsolete artifact of the picture postcard, but to a way of life that has now been put in sharp relief. Muniz's images--created out of collaged pieces of vintage postcards from the artist's personal collection--materialize the experience and longing of travel, triangulating between the traveler, a distant location, and the recipient who, increasingly, remains at home. Volume I presents thirty-two single postcards displaying each of the images in the series. Volume II presents a series of thirty-six postcards that, when assembled, can be viewed as a single, large-scale work of 30 x 40 inches. The process of assembling the larger, single image is akin to the original act of collage--or like that of assembling a mosaic crafted from disparate pieces that have traveled from afar, but when brought together, conjure something that is larger, more complete than any individual element could be on its own.
