While there is a reasonable selection of readers for use with classes studying Greek, there is a shortage of book containing suitable selections for teaching the techniques of translation; this book is designed to fill this gap. It consists of three sections. The first contains a series of sequences which tell a particular story, each sequence being introduced by a brief account of the context; the majority of the sequences are from prose authors. There are also a few individual passages. The second section consists of harder pieces, both prose and verse, some of which are arranged in sequenses, but a greater proportion of which are isolated pieces intended for use as unseens. The final section is an Appendix, which is intended as a convenient source of Greek practice passages. Diplomat DeWitt Clinton Poole arrived for a new job at the United States consulate office in Moscow in September 1917, just two months before the Bolshevik Revolution. In Ladies' Greek, Yopie Prins illuminates a culture of female classical literacy that emerged in the second half of the nineteenth century, during the formation of women's colleges on both sides of the Atlantic. Why did Victorian women of letters desire to learn ancient Greek, a "dead" language written in a strange alphabet and no longer spoken?
