The last section addresses the physiological effects of weightlessness. The book’s simple didactic approach makes it easy to read: equations are kept to a minimum, while examples and applications are presented in the appendices. Simple sketches and photos from actual space missions illustrate the main content. This book focuses on all of the major problems associated with the absence of body weight in space, by analyzing effects, adaption, and re-adaptation upon returning to Earth, using sound scientific principles embedded in a historical context. Serious problems for space travelers range from Space Motion Sickness (SMS) to recently discovered ocular effects that may permanently impair vision. Fluid loss and shifts, spinal changes, and bone and muscle loss are also all results of weightlessness. Starting with a brief definition and history of weightlessness, the authors then address in detail each problem as well as the countermeasures aimed at alleviating them. In some cases, alternative hypotheses regarding what can and should be attempted are also presented. As plans for long-term missions to the Moon and Mars develop, it will be essential to find countermeasures to weightlessness that are effective for missions that could span years.

Investigations in space have led to fundamental discoveries of the human body to the space environment. Gilles Clément has conducted extensive research in this field. This readable text presents the findings from the life science experiments conducted during and after space missions. About 1200 human space flights have been completed to date, including more than 500 astronauts from various countries, for a combined total presence in space of about 90 years. The first edition of this title was published in 2005 (written in 2003 – 2004), and new data is now available from crewmembers participating in long-duration flights on board the International Space Station (ISS). The number of astronauts who have spent six months in orbit has doubled since 2004. "Absence of gravity results in the loss of many familiar kinesthetic cues of weight and friction necessary to man for object discrimination and manipulation. Man's ability to discriminate small differences in mass as opposed to small differences in weight was studied. Four weight series were used, each consisting of a standard (1000, 3000, 5000, or 7000 grams) and nine comparison stimuli. Judgments for mass differences were made with the same weights supported by compressed air on an air-bearing table. Thus, the frictionless aspect of a weightless environment was simulated. Results show that the mean difference limen, mean standard deviation, and Weber ratio (∆ S/S) for each standard are much larger for mass than for weight. Thus, to be detected under a weightless condition, mass increments must be at least twice as large as the weight increments required for discrimination in a normal weight-lifting situation.
