Oh Miriam!
Author: Miriam Margolyes
Publisher: John Murray
ISBN: 1399803387
Category : Self-Help
Languages : en
Pages : 370
Book Description
'Oh Miriam! risks the curse of the sequel, and pulls it off . . . A force of nature, a tour de farce. Bold, brave and bright, but also revealing, shocking and touching. Miriam is an icon, a cocksucker - and the star of her show' ROBERT McCRUM, Independent 'Our naughtiest national treasure . . . famously filthy, funny and phlegmatic . . . Oh Miriam! is Margolyes's manifesto for a fulfilled life . . . She loves to tell it straight. And the older she gets, the straighter she tells it' SIMON HATTENSTONE, Guardian 'Irrepressible . . . A life-enhancing rollercoaster of a ride . . . this book is like Margolyes herself - outspoken, ebullient and unexpectedly wise' EMMA LEE-POTTER, Daily Express 'Snortingly funny . . . deliciously unbridled . . . There is something heroic in her unruliness. Let Miriam take the lead and enjoy the show' RHIK SAMADDER, Observer 'Insanely interesting, full of profanity and profundity, Oh Miriam!'s title comes from all the people who have ever exclaimed her name in every tone from horror to hilarity; and her unfiltered personality leaps off the page - honesty, kindness, generosity, sanity, erudition, outspokenness' SUZANNE HARRINGTON, Irish Examiner 'Endearingly eccentric' WOMEN'S WEEKLY From declaring my love to Vanessa Redgrave to being fed cockroaches by Steve Buscemi, from turnip-based comedy with Blackadder to being farted on by Arnold Schwarzenegger, from Graham Norton's sofa to Alan Cumming's camper van, my life has been (and continues to be) an uproarious adventure. Oh Miriam! has been such a constant refrain in my life, said in all kinds of tones - laughs, surprised gasps and orgasmic sighs (I'm hoping for all of those from you as you read on!) - that it had to be the title of this book. And with a cast list that stretches from Churchill to DiCaprio, Dahl to Dietrich, Princess Margaret to Maggie Smith, I've so much more to tell you and so much more to say. My chapters range from 'How to Stay Married' to 'Don't Let the Bastards Get You Down'. Discover how to break the thickest conversational ice; why swearing is actually good for you (though not on the Today programme); the unexpected things I learned at school and what my Spice Girl name would be. Not to mention my Tale of the Unexpected and my very own Vagina Monologue. Buckle up and join me on another unforgettable adventure, but this time through my heart and head . . .

Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 464
Book Description
Praise for Five Easy Decades: How Jack Nicholson Became the Biggest Movie Star in Modern Times "Dennis McDougal is a rare Hollywood reporter: honest, fearless, nobody's fool. This is unvarnished Jack for Jack-lovers and Jack-skeptics but, also, for anyone interested in the state of American culture and celebrity. I always read Mr. McDougal for pointers but worry that he will end up in a tin drum off the coast of New Jersey."-- Patrick McGilligan, author of Jack's Life and Alfred Hitchcock: A Life in Darkness and Light Praise for Privileged Son: Otis Chandler and the Rise and Fall of the L.A. Times Dynasty "A great freeway pileup--part biography, part dysfunctional family chronicle, and part institutional and urban history, with generous dollops of scandal and gossip."-- Hendrick Hertzberg, The New Yorker "McDougal has managed to scale the high walls that have long protected the Chandler clan and returned with wicked tales told by angry ex-wives and jealous siblings."--The Washington Post Praise for The Last Mogul: Lew Wasserman, MCA and the Hidden History of Hollywood "Real glamour needs a dark side. That is part of the fascination of Dennis McDougal's wonderful book."--The Economist "Thoroughly reported and engrossing . . . the most noteworthy trait of MCA was how it hid its power."--The New York Times Book Review "Over the years, I've read hundreds of books on Hollywood and the movie business, and this one is right at the top."-- Michael Blowen, The Boston Globe

Making the Invisible Visible
Author: Leonie Sandercock
Publisher: Univ of California Press
ISBN: 0520918576
Category : Architecture
Languages : en
Pages : 284
Book Description
The history of planning is much more, according to these authors, than the recorded progress of planning as a discipline and a profession. These essays counter the mainstream narrative of rational, scientific development with alternative histories that reveal hitherto invisible planning practices and agendas. While the official story of planning celebrates the state and its traditions of city building and regional development, these stories focus on previously unacknowledged actors and the noir side of planning. Through a variety of critical lenses—feminist, postmodern, and postcolonial—the essays examine a broad range of histories relevant to the preservation and planning professions. Some contributors uncover indigenous planning traditions that have been erased from the record: African American and Native American traditions, for example. Other contributors explore new themes: themes of gendered spaces and racist practices, of planning as an ordering tool, a kind of spatial police, of "bodies, cities, and social order" (influenced by Foucault, Lefebvre, and others), and of resistance. This scrutiny of the class, race, gender, ethnic, or ideological biases of ideas and practices inherent in the notion of planning as a modernist social technology clearly points to the inadequacy of modernist planning histories. Making the Invisible Visible redefines planning as the regulation of the physicality, sociality, and spatiality of the city. Its histories provide the foundation of a new, alternative planning paradigm for the multicultural cities of the future.

The Latitude of Home
Author: Sally Russell
Publisher: Mercer University Press
ISBN: 9780881460780
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 292
Book Description
"Coming from a family that some would call addicted to storytelling, Sally Russell began listening nearly twenty years ago, especially for stories that bring the past into the present. The subjects range from love, sex, and death to less weighty considerations such as journeys, building fires, cooking, and a variety of family matters. Beginning with her own family's account of what happened to them during the American Civil War and how those stories directly affected her life 125 years later, Russell shares the discovery of time-traveling through a range of tales that are humorous, historical, haphazard, heart-warming, and heartbreaking, often within the same story." "For Russell, all stories, however personal or cultural, represent shared human history and form an intricate, original, and sheltering tapestry that belongs to all and represents a curious security in our future-shock world. Through beloved old stories and through new ones Russell forms, threads of regret, sorrow, joy, wonder, courage, wisdom, beauty, and some other thing that isn't any of these things - perhaps the greatest mystery - are woven into a fabric that entertains, educates, and delights with scenes of days gone by, portraits of worthwhile people, and events that shape our characters." "Storytelling is an important vehicle by which we bond with each other in multiple dimensions and across generations. The stories she shares show how story-telling gives us a latitude of home, to use an old nautical term, i.e., a reference point on our map of being that shows us where we came from. In a figurative sense, latitude of home is that place/time from which we start. Our stories, our family myths, give us the knowledge of our place in Time. Russell invites readers to consider their own repertoires of stories, what they can learn about and from their own family myth, and how they can share that myth to inform, delight, and strengthen."--BOOK JACKET.
