Book Description
Looking for music to utilize as an alternative to requiring your full band to play for a graduation ceremony? Are you asked to provide music for graduation ceremonies at lower grade levels other than senior graduation? If so, you can easily program this arrangement with other ensemble music. Focus on a small brass ensemble or the brass section of your band. This work will be loved by everyone. This arrangement of The Grand March from Verdi's opera Aida is intended to accompany and complement Sir Edward Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance Marches 1 and 4. They are the popular, recognizable, and traditional prelude and recessional works played at graduation ceremonies. This work could easily be used before or after the graduates' promenade, or during the ceremony as a featured work. The arrangement is scored for brass quintet (2 trumpets, Horn, and 2 trombones). However, it includes parts for Tuba and T.C. Baritone. The Horn in F part doubles the 2nd Trombone and Tuba and T.C. Baritone double the 3rd Trombone providing flexibility of use. The range in the first trumpet part extends once to a high C. This arrangement is in Concert Key of Bb Major with a short contrasting section in Db. It is a relatively easy arrangement, playable by capable middle level and high school players as a quintet or a brass ensemble with varied number of performers. The purchaser of this volume is free to make copies of the parts for rehearsal and performance purposes. So, once you've prepared the parts for the first rehearsal/performance, file this volume away and it will be there, complete, without missing parts, for years to come. Scroll below to videos to see and hear the score as played in Finale.

Book Description
Now a byword for beauty, Verdi’s operas were far from universally acclaimed when they reached London in the second half of the nineteenth century. Why did some critics react so harshly? Who were they and what biases and prejudices animated them? When did their antagonistic attitude change? And why did opera managers continue to produce Verdi’s operas, in spite of their alleged worthlessness? Massimo Zicari’s Verdi in Victorian London reconstructs the reception of Verdi’s operas in London from 1844, when a first critical account was published in the pages of The Athenaeum, to 1901, when Verdi’s death received extensive tribute in The Musical Times. In the 1840s, certain London journalists were positively hostile towards the most talked-about representative of Italian opera, only to change their tune in the years to come. The supercilious critic of The Athenaeum, Henry Fothergill Chorley, declared that Verdi’s melodies were worn, hackneyed and meaningless, his harmonies and progressions crude, his orchestration noisy. The scribes of The Times, The Musical World, The Illustrated London News, and The Musical Times all contributed to the critical hubbub. Yet by the 1850s, Victorian critics, however grudging, could neither deny nor ignore the popularity of Verdi’s operas. Over the final three decades of the nineteenth century, moreover, London’s musical milieu underwent changes of great magnitude, shifting the manner in which Verdi was conceptualized and making room for the powerful influence of Wagner. Nostalgic commentators began to lament the sad state of the Land of Song, referring to the now departed "palmy days of Italian opera." Zicari charts this entire cultural constellation. Verdi in Victorian London is required reading for both academics and opera aficionados. Music specialists will value a historical reconstruction that stems from a large body of first-hand source material, while Verdi lovers and Italian opera addicts will enjoy vivid analysis free from technical jargon. For students, scholars and plain readers alike, this book is an illuminating addition to the study of music reception.

Book Description
This book traces the development of Azerbaijani art music from its origins in the Eastern, modal, improvisational tradition known as mugham through its fusion with Western classical, jazz, and world art music. Aida Huseynova places the fascinating and little-known history of music in Azerbaijan against the vivid backdrop of cultural life under Soviet influence, which paradoxically both encouraged and repressed the evolution of national musics and post-Soviet independence. Inspired by their neighbors to the East and West, Azerbaijani musicians enjoyed a period of remarkable creativity, composing and performing the first opera and the first ballet in the Muslim East, establishing the region's first Opera and Ballet Theater and Conservatory of Music, and discovering ways to merge the modal lyricism of mugham with the rhythmic dynamics of jazz. Drawing on previously unstudied archives, letters, and documents as well as her experience as an Azerbaijani musician and educator, Huseynova shows how Azerbaijani musical development was not a product of Soviet cultural policies but rather grew from and reflected deep and complex cultural processes.
