In England, implementing Electronic patient record (EPR) systems is one of the main aims of the 10-year National Programme for Information Technology (NPfIT). The main plank of the NPfIT programme is the NHS Care Records Service (NCRS) which will create two separate EPR systems: a national Summary Care Record (SCR), containing basic information, and local Detailed Care Records (DCRs), containing more comprehensive clinical information. NCRS will also include a Secondary Uses Service (SUS) which will provide access to aggregated data for management, research and other 'secondary' purposes. Experts estimate that as many as 98,000 people die in any given year from medical errors that occur in hospitals. That's more than die from motor vehicle accidents, breast cancer, or AIDSâ€"three causes that receive far more public attention. Indeed, more people die annually from medication errors than from workplace injuries.
