Book Description
Poetry. Winner of the 2019 Richard Snyder Memorial Publication Prize. "The poems in MIDWEST GOTHIC make the daily deliciously strange--'the daily / which isn't still at all but a whirring / gone deep.' They make us work our way inside them, but once I entered this book, I didn't want to leave. I wanted to stay in 'the copper-tipped town;' I wanted to stay with the delphinium, 'a choir of indigo, ' and 'cornfields made surreal / in the dark.' These difficult times have tested my faith in many things, including language, and MIDWEST GOTHIC arrived just in time to remind me what poems can do."--Maggie Smith

Book Description
Poet, author, musician, movie director, actor, radio DJ and photographer, Randy James Rosko has really outdone himself with this feature book, Gothic Poetry: For the Pure of Heart. This book is a labor of love and contains poetry from all Rosko's years of hard work: 1983-2021. All the poetry in this volume was inspired by the seven muses: beauty, sorrow, joy, isolation, mystery, darkness, and paradise lost and once again found. Rosko has experienced these seven muses numerous times with the passing years. Not since Edgar Allen Poe or Lord Byron has poetry come alive in such a macabre way! The poems in this volume deal with love, life, death, and of course, the supernatural. They range from the deadly serious to the morbidly playful and sensual.

Book Description
Original working manuscript of Swinburne's poem "The garden of Proserpine". Bound with the manuscript pages are a printed version of the poem from an unknown published edition (pages numbered 189-192). Formerly owned by the book collector and literary forger Harry Buxton Forman. A note from Forman is written on a blank leaf preceding the manuscript: The Garden of Proserpine, perhaps the loveliest lyric poem Swinburne ever wrote, was set up from this autograph manuscript when the poem took its place in the renowned volume known as Poems and Ballads, issued in the Autumn of 1866, immediately withdrawn under pressure by Mr. Moxon, and speedily re-issued by John Camden Hotten. The calligraphy is more characteristic than excellent. The cancellings and changes, however, are of considerable interest.

Book Description
Combining lush Gothic lyricism with postmodern experimentation, Oliver Sheppard's second collection of verse, Thirteen Nocturnes, presents a nightmare vision of a world in the grip of apocalypse and shadow-a world where "a nighttime of years never-ending" becomes "a darkness severe and unbending," and where life is relentlessly "gathered up against the towering shadow of decay." Taking cues from the dark Romanticism of Poe, the decadent Symbolism of Baudelaire, and the apocalyptic tradition of William Blake-as well as the existential doominess of 20th century cosmic horror-Oliver Sheppard's Thirteen Nocturnes presents a verse vision of collapse, announcing a cold poetics of disintegration in the new dark age of the Anthropocene. "Reading Sheppard's poetry is a little like listening to a conversation between Nietzsche and William Blake during a showing of Peckinpah's Cross of Iron. Using a wide range of forms and cultural references, Sheppard illustrates the human condition in ways that take as much account of its absence as its presence... Given the chance, Sheppard will lead you down dark and unfamiliar paths, to moments of weird beauty." -from the foreword by John Foster

Book Description
Gothic verse liberated the dark side of Romantic and Victorian verse: its medievalism, melancholy and morbidity. Some poets intended merely to shock or entertain, but Gothic also liberated the creative imagination and inspired them to enter disturbing areas of the psyche and to portray extreme states of human consciousness. This anthology illustrates that journey. This is the first modern anthology of Gothic verse. It traces the rise of Gothic in the late eighteenth century and follows its footsteps through the nineteenth century. Gothic has never truly died as it constantly reinvents itself, and this lively, illustrated and annotated anthology offers students the atmospheric poetry that originally studded terror novels and inspired horror films. Alongside canonical verse by Coleridge, Keats and Poe, it introduces readers to lesser-known authors excursions into the macabre and the grotesque. A wide range of poetic forms is included: as well as ballads, tales, lyrics, meditative odes and dramatic monologues, a medievalist romance by Scott and Gothic drama by Byron are also included in full. A substantial introduction by Caroline Franklin puts the rise of Gothic poetry into its historical context, relating it both to Romanticism and Enlightenment historicism. Although Gothic fiction has now been receiving serious critical attention for twenty years, Gothic verse has been largely overlooked. It is therefore hoped that this anthology will stimulate scholarly interest as well as readers pleasure in these unearthly poems.

Book Description
The poetry of Christina Rossetti is often described as ‘gothic' and yet this term has rarely been examined in the specific case of Rossetti's work. Based on new readings of the full range of her writings, from ‘Goblin Market' to the devotional poems and prose works, this book explores Rossetti's use of Gothic forms and images to consider her as a Gothic writer. Christina Rossetti's Gothic analyses the poet's use of the grotesque and the spectral and the Christian roots and Pre-Raphaelite influences of Rossetti's deployment of Gothic tropes.
