Book Description
The search for a reversible male contraceptive has centered upon the suppression of sperm production or sperm motility. Gossypol, a natural substance extracted from the cotton plant, appears to cause both of these effects. Its ability to reduce spermatogenesis in men is undeniable and has been demonstrated in both large studies in China and a smaller confirmatory study in Brazil. These investiga tions have revealed the remarkable fact that with gossypol, it is possible to separate an effect on the testis' gamete-producing function from an effect on its hormone-producing function. Thus, it is possible to maintain normal testosterone levels and libido while sperm counts (and motility) fall. Because of this unique and important action, gossypol warrants the fullest possible evaluation as a potential male contraceptive. Sheldon J. Segal vii ACKNOWLEDGMENT Lynn C. Landman played a major role in this publication by skillfully editing the manuscripts which were submitted for inclusion in this volume. Janet O'Connell added her efforts in editing, assembling texts and figures and handling final details required for publication. I thank these talented colleagues for their invaluable contributions.

Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1000086887
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 369
Book Description
First published in 1997. Natural toxicants are the subject of research throughout the world, and they are used for many purposes. The Handbook of Plant and Fungal Toxicants presents a wide range of compounds and considers how they relate to food safety, therapeutic purposes in medicine, and uses in breeding plants for enhanced resistance to insects and disease. Alkaloids, both from plant and fungal sources, are emphasized. Also covered are a variety of toxicants and phytochemicals including: bracken fern poisons polyphenolics gossypol flavones isoflavones pyrimidine glycosides fruit and vegetable allergens linear furanocoumarins photosensitizing agents nitrates oxalates Pinus ponderosa toxicants The text stresses the positive aspects of plant secondary compounds and presents examples of beneficial attributes in the context of environmental protection and human health. An international authorship addresses the global diversity and ecological distribution of plant and fungal toxicants. This handbook is ideal for senior-level college students and post-graduate students studying animal science, toxicology, and pharmaceutical sciences.

Poultry Production in Hot Climates
Author: Nuhad Joseph Daghir
Publisher: CABI
ISBN: 1845934172
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 403
Book Description
The poultry industry continues to expand in the warm regions of the world at a much faster rate than in temperate zones. Not only can it be quickly and easily developed in these hot climates but poultry meat and eggs can serve as important sources of animal protein in those areas of the world that have protein insufficiency. Fully revised and updated, this new edition describes how the detrimental effects of heat stress can be reduced through the manipulation of housing, breeding, nutrition and management, and includes new contributions on controlled-environment housing, waterfowl, and breeding fast-growing broilers.

Chemical Food Safety
Author: Leon Brimer
Publisher: CABI
ISBN: 9781845937874
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 295
Book Description
Preventing contamination with problematic chemical compounds in food, from 'plant to plate and meat to meal', begins with an understanding of the food production and processing chain as well as relevant issues in toxicology and risk management. The diversity in origin and structure of unwanted chemical substances means that combating chemical contaminants in food needs a good understanding of science in a number of disciplines as well as the regulatory processes designed to minimise risks to a world population increasingly exposed through international trade. This book covers the basic and applied science needed to understand, analyse and take professional action on problems and questions concerning chemical food safety, from acute to long lasting problems that call for interventions on a local, regional, national or international level. Risk assessment is explained in the context of targeted future risk management and risk communication. The book follows problematic chemical compounds through production and processing of foods of plant, fungal, algal or animal origin, including oral exposure and intestinal absorption of such contaminants. The aim is to reach a harmonized level of understanding of all aspects of chemical food safety, so as to make the graduated student ready for work in all sectors related to food and its production.
