Book Description
In summer 2016, the U.S. National Park Service began a study on the history and design of the National Park Service golf courses at East Potomac Park, Rock Creek Park, and Langston. As enthusiasm for the sport began in the early 20th century, the District of Columbia's public golf courses were built by the federal government for those who could not afford to play at the area's private clubs and as part of the expansion of parks and recreation facilities in the nation's capital. Initially built between 1918 and 1939, the three courses hosted numerous tournaments, Presidents of the United States, renowned American golfers, as well as countless local citizens. The golf courses also played a role in the city's Civil Rights movement, the National Park Service's position against segregation, and the integration of the city's recreational facilities between 1941 and 1954. The National Park Service will use these studies as critical planning tools for the on-going management, interpretation, and public use of the golf courses. Book Description
The 1960 U.S. Open Golf Championship played at Cherry Hills Country Club in Denver, Colorado, remains perhaps the most dramatic, competitive, and passionate of all Open championships. In 1960 the young lions of the game were eager to reach the top tier occupied by venerable players such as Ben Hogan and Sam Snead. In this Open only a single stroke separated the three leaders-Ben Hogan, Arnold Palmer, and a young but talented amateur named Jack Nicklaus-on the final two holes. The stunning conclusion would prove a watershed in the lives of all three players, and in the game itself. Golf's Greatest Championship is a suspenseful, richly detailed chronicle of this epic chapter in the game of golf.

Book Description
On a fateful day in 1964, legendary journalist Alistair Cooke was dragged into Van Cortlandt Park in New York City to play his first game of golf and was immediately hooked. Golf became his greatest passion, even though he called it “a method of self-torture, disguised as a game.” Few have written more brilliantly or more lovingly about golf than he does here in this collection. For the first time, Golf gathers together the best of Cooke’s writing on what he called “the marvelous mania.” This stunning collection showcases the incomparable wit and mischievous charm that made Cooke one of the greatest journalists and broadcasters and “one of the most effective interpreters of the American way of life to the world” (New York Times) of the twentieth century. Whether it is Arnold Palmer playing in 102-degree heat in San Antonio; dapper Gary Player winning the US Open at Creve Coeur, Missouri; or Jack Nicklaus playing—and winning—almost everywhere, Alistair Cooke on his favorite sport is a rare and constant pleasure. This is a book no golfer—pro or amateur—should go without. Skyhorse Publishing, as well as our Sports Publishing imprint, are proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested in sports—books about baseball, pro football, college football, pro and college basketball, hockey, or soccer, we have a book about your sport or your team.
