Book Description
This book incorporates a selection of eight revised papers presented at the Conference on "Managing Economic Crisis in Southeast Asia", organized jointly by the Saw Centre for Financial Studies, NUS Business School and the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies, in January 2010. The chapters deal with the management of the 2008-09 economic crisis in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines, Indonesia, and the region as a whole. They represent an analysis of the impact of the economic crisis and the stimulus packages that were swiftly put in place by the governments to mitigate the economic recession and to pave the way for a quick recovery. The success of the monetary and fiscal policy measures in engendering a strong economic recovery in these countries is also discussed in considerable depth. The book, with contributions from experts on the topics covered, will be extremely valuable to businessmen, analysts, academics, students, policy-makers and the general public interested in seeking a greater understanding of the sub-prime crisis that led to the global economic recession.

Book Description
This book is about the global economic crisis occurred in the period 2008-2009 with the reference to the economy of member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). The main reason that this book focuses on ASEAN is simply because since 1990 until today the region has been hit by two big economic crisis. The first one was known as the Asian financial crisis happened in 1997-1998, which is considered merely as a regional economic crisis since it was originated within the region and its has not really produced a global economic recession. The second one was that in 2008-09, which started first in 2007 as a huge financial crisis in the United States (US) and then spread worldwide. The experiences with these two big economic crises strongly suggest that the economy of many ASEAN member countries, especially Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines is vulnerable to any economic shocks; although the level of vulnerability to economic crises may vary by country.

Book Description
This book aims to identify and analyze the impact of the 2007-09 global financial crisis on Asian economies and to assess the short-term and longer-term policy responses to the crisis in terms of their effectiveness and sustainability. It draws lessons on how best to avoid and/or mitigate future crises and to identify structural policy recommendations that can help guide Asian policymakers to expand the growth potential of domestic and regional demand in coming years, and thereby create a basis for sustainable and inclusive long-term growth. Organized into four parts, it offers an accessible explanation of the causes, consequences, and contagion mechanisms of the crisis. Part 1 provides an overview of the major issues and presents policy recommendations. Part 2 reviews the crisis in the US and its transmission to Europe. Part 3 focuses on the impact on Asia. And Part 4 concludes lessons of the crisis for Asian countries. The volume highlights that Asian economies have already recovered strongly from the global financial crisis, reflecting their aggressive moves to ease monetary and fiscal policy as well as the underlying fundamental strength of their economies. However, the biggest challenge lies ahead. It asserts that, given that it is unlikely that the US and Europe will be engines of global growth, Asian economies should contribute to global economic adjustment by creating their own growth engines.

Book Description
The book analyzes the nature of Chinese economy which enables it to go through the financial tsunami pretty unscathed. It discusses the stimulus package designed by the Chinese government to keep the economy on course, as well as its results — both positive and negative aspects in the middle and long term. The 2008-09 financial crisis makes it very clear that we need a two-pronged approach to deal with the situation, namely governments need a) to take quick and decisive actions to stem any further deterioration in financial systems; b) to revamp their economies by refitting existing engines in the real economy. China, as the third largest economy in the world, and with its robust domestic consumption and a healthy financial system, is one of the most important drivers to pull the world out of recession.According to the Chinese leadership, China's main contribution is to keep its own economy running smoothly. In response to the crisis, the Beijing government has poured money into the following sectors: public housing, earthquake reconstruction, physical infrastructure, social security, education and healthcare. So far, the results have helped China to maintain the targeted high growth. Given the open nature of its economy, its high growth has also benefited other countries, thereby contributing to the global economy. The current crisis strengthens a trend that has emerged since the Asian financial crisis of 1997. And that is the enhanced economic integration of China with its East Asian neighbours and Southeast Asia. This augurs well for East Asian regionalism which may include the birth of Asian Monetary Fund. The global environment in the wake of the crisis poses new challenges to China, for example, in the form of shrinking size of its traditional export market in the USA and Europe. China needs to modify its strategy from previous export-oriented and investment-driven strategy into one with more emphasis on consumption. There is a lot of scope for China to embark on productive consumption such as cleaning up the environment, physical infrastructure, social security, education and healthcare. If done well, they will lay a firm basis for long-term economic development. It represents an occasion for China to embark on a nation-wide effort to upgrade its economy in the key sectors. At the same time, attention needs to be paid to improving economic-legal institutional framework to support China's role as a major global player.

Book Description
'This book provides a coherent and current account of how India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines and the People's Republic of China coped with the Asian financial crisis of the 1990s and the recent global economic recession, and how they may address future challenges in maintaining growth in difficult times. It features a valuable overview of issues from a regional perspective, five chapters on general elements and obstacles in development, and individual chapters on the experience of each of the six countries. Every chapter is replete with relevant institutional and statistical data. The volume fills a void in the literature and is highly recommended for graduate students and for economists concerned with contemporary Asia.' – Peter Drake, The University of New England and Australian Catholic University, Australia 'To understand what makes Asia tick in the face of continuing global uncertainty and instability one has to go beyond numbers into the region's psyche and idiosyncrasies. This volume provides an interestingly intrusive and refreshingly insightful analysis of a highly complex phenomenon that defies generalizations as shown by the diversity of individual country experiences.' – Mohamed Ariff, International Centre for Education in Islamic Finance (INCEIF), Malaysia The center of global economic activity is shifting rapidly towards Asia, driven by a combination of the economic dynamism of the People's Republic of China, India, and other middle-income Asian countries, and sluggish growth in the OECD economies. The rapid growth and rising global prominence have raised a range of major challenges for Asia and for the rest of the world. This comprehensive, forward-looking book examines these issues through in-depth studies of major Asian economies and an analysis of the key development policy options. The contributors, leading international authorities in their field, explore cross-cutting thematic issues with special reference to developing Asia. They address a broad range of subjects including: investment and productivity, savings and the savings–investment relationship, financial development, the provision of infrastructure, and governance and institutions. Detailed country studies focusing on the People's Republic of China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand not only provide an analytical narrative for each case study, but also draw attention to the similarities and diversity within the region. This challenging and thought-provoking book will prove an important point of reference for scholars, researchers, and students in the fields of economics, development economics, and Asian studies.

Book Description
The turmoil that has rocked Asian markets since the middle of 1997, and that is now having such deep effects on the economies in the region, is the third major currency crisis of the 1990s. This study explains how the Asian crisis arose and spread. It then outlines the corrective policy measures that could help end the crisis, and the shortcomings that have been revealed in the international financial system that require reform to reduce the chances of a recurrence.
