N 2010, Giovanna Silva was asked to photograph a school in Afghanistan dedicated to Italian journalist Maria Grazia Cutuli, who was killed in a terrorist attack ten years before. Silva was housed at the Italian base in Herat, a western province of the country. She lived there for two weeks in close contact with the military personnel, moving around with them and seeing the country from their standpoint. Her photos convey the feeling of that trip, with its sometimes claustrophobic aspects: the landscape revealed through the window of a vehicle, or gaping open under the blinding sun. The book recreates this narrative, moving from aesthetic visions of dim interiors and bodies in camouflage to open horizons full of light, but also rife with conflict.

In 1962, the architecture practice Ponti Fornaroli Rosselli was commissioned to design and build part of the Ministries area of the new capital of West Pakistan, Islamabad, which was under construction according to Constantinos Doxiadis and Robert Matthew?s master plan. Fifteen hundred architecture drawings and less than two years later, the buildings were completed. At some moments, five thousand workers were on site at the same time. Today we associate the Renaissance with painting, sculpture, and architecture—the “major” arts. Yet contemporaries often held the “minor” arts—gem-studded goldwork, richly embellished armor, splendid tapestries and embroideries, music, and ephemeral multi-media spectacles—in much higher esteem. Isabella d’Este, Marchesa of Mantua, was typical of the Italian nobility: she bequeathed to her children precious stone vases mounted in gold, engraved gems, ivories, and antique bronzes and marbles; her favorite ladies-in-waiting, by contrast, received mere paintings. Renaissance patrons and observers extolled finely wrought luxury artifacts for their exquisite craftsmanship and the symbolic capital of their components; paintings and sculptures in modest materials, although discussed by some literati, were of lesser consequence. This book endeavors to return to the mainstream material long marginalized as a result of historical and ideological biases of the intervening centuries.
