Book Description
Excerpt from Giorgione It is absolutely necessary for those whose judgment depends upon a study of the actual pictures to be constantly registering and adjusting their impressions. I have personally seen and studied all the pictures I believe to be by Giorgione, with the exception of those at St. Petersburg; and many galleries and churches where they hang have been visited repeat edly, and at considerable intervals of time. If in the course of years my individual impressions (where they deviate from hitherto recognised views) fail to stand the test of time, I shall be the first to admit their inadequacy. If, on the other hand, they prove sound, some of the mists which at present envelop the figure. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Four Great Venetians: An Account of the Lives and Works of Giorgione Titian, Tintoretto, and IL Veronese Giotto, and the sculpture of Donatello are pene trated with an intense seriousness such as no Keltic race has ever given proof of, nor do we meet with its like in the art or literature of any other race, an cient or modern. It was this intensity of feeling, this deep-rooted spiritual earnestness, which formed the basis of Italian art, and through which alone it succeeded in rising to the most exalted heights. It is true that the more strongly Gallic communities Of northern Italy were quick to apprehend its value, adopted it, and assimilated themselves to it; so that Tuscan art flourished and became in a manner in digenous in their own fertile plains, just as the French of our time assimilate foreign ideas and in ventions more readily than other races. Correggio is the typical example of the Tuscan principle grafted upon a thoroughly Gallic nature. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Giorgione, a New Study of His Art as a Landscape Painter Vedelago is only four miles distant from Castelfranco along the Treviso road, so that it really matters little whether our artist was born in the big village or the little town, the same flat plain and type of scenery being common to both. Bassano is the nearest important place to them, being some eight or nine miles away. Giorgione came to Venice when still quite young, but, as I shall Show, already a formed artist. He may have served his apprenticeship at Bassano before going to the great city of the lagoons and entering the workshop of Giovanni Bellini, rather as an assistant than as an apprentice. Save for probable visits to Castelfranco he seems to have spent the whole of his' independent working life at Venice, and there in the year 1510 he died of the plague at the early age of thirty-three. We may imagine him settled down about the year 1494, at which time he would have had as companions among Bellini's helpers, Bissolo, Pierino Santo, Lattanzio da Rimini, and Marco Marziale. Book Description
Excerpt from The Earlier Work of Titian Thus, though there cannot be claimed for Titian that universality in art and science which the lovers of Leonardo's painting must ever deplore, since it lured him into a thousand side-paths; or the vastness of scope of Michelangelo, or even the all-embracing curiosity of Albrecht Diirer; it must be seen that as a painter he covered more ground than any first-rate master of the sixteenth century. While in more than one branch of the painter's art he stood forth supreme and without a rival, in most others he remained second to none, alone in great pictorial decorations of the monumental order yielding the palm to his younger rivals Tintoretto and Paolo Veronese, who showed them selves more practised and more successfully daring in this particular branch. Excerpt from Titian If ever a man's works told the story of his life, surely Titian's do. I have tried to tell that story as I learn it from him. If I have failed in this, I shall not, I trust, at least have lessened the fame of his eminent biographers, to whom I owe a debt of gratitude for many long days of. Book Description
The Tempest is Giorgione's most enigmatic painting. It is a depiction of Giorgione's own family, of the "family of man" tale from Boccaccio, or of the myth of Apollo's birth? In this remarkable study, Salvatore Settis uses the mystery of the painting to shed light on the relationship between artist, patron, work, and critic. The result is a brilliant piece of detective work in the history and sociology of culture that stresses the function of Giorgione's art for the emerging, classically educated connoisseur elite of sixteenth-century Venice.
