Book Description
"The Joy Document is probing and uplifting, both a celebration of a half-century well lived and a meditation on what comes next. The book contains fifty essays of varying length and explores spirituality, aging, women's empowerment, identity, and the practices of cultivating gratitude and radically reclaiming joy, all while gently inspiring readers to find their own joy, to imagine or perhaps re-imagine their own best lives. In The Joy Document, almost anything can become revelatory-an Earth Day Whole Foods errand, Claire Saffitz's fruit cake recipe, a harrowing ride in Twinkly Taxi, an evening picnic at Dvorak's Symphony 8, cartwheels in the driveway, a small dog with a big erection, weekday morning gin shots, blue ghost fireflies...you name it. From this post-fifty perspective, joy is both harder to come by and easier to find, and once you begin really looking for it, you can find it pretty much anywhere"--

Book Description
This book charts the history of gin from its arrival in England in the sixteenth century to the present day. In doing so it uses a range of perspectives: economic, social, cultural and political to give a rounded picture of how the spirit developed in the way it did over some 400 years. It looks at how gin’s popularity has ebbed and flowed over the centuries among different groups in society. It is therefore concerned with the drinkers of gin and why they chose it and at the meanings which they attached to its consumption. Gin was particularly popular with women and the spirit is often associated with them, in phrases like Mother’s Ruin. This also alerts us to the fact that gin has often had a bad press, never more so than in the infamous Gin Craze of the first half of the eighteenth century, so vividly depicted in Hogarth’s Gin Lane. The book attempts to tell something of the real history of gin beneath the frequent condemnation. It ends with the resurgence of gin’s popularity with the emergence of so-called designer gins in the twenty-first century.

Book Description
The perfect gift, this book is not a how-to guide. It won't tell you how to get your baby to sleep, how to deal with toddler tantrums, how to be a good parent, a cool parent, or even a renegade parent. It's a book about parenting that contains absolutely no useful advice whatsoever. Instead, Hurrah for Gin shares beautifully honest anecdotes and illustrations from the parenting front line that demonstrate it is perfectly possible to love your children with the whole of your heart while finding them incredibly irritating at the same time. From pregnancy to starting school, Hurrah for Gin takes you through the exciting, frustrating, infuriating, and wonderful whirlwind of parenthood, offering solidarity and a friendly hug after a tough day. Best served with gin.

Book Description
Jesus and Gin is a rollicking tour of the roaring twenties and the barn- burning preachers who led the temperance movement—the anti-abortion crusade of the Jazz Age. Along the way, we meet a host of colorful characters: a Baptist minister who commits adultery in the White House; media star preachers caught in massive scandals; a presidential election hinging on a religious issue; and fundamentalists and liberals slugging it out in the culture war of the day. The religious roar of that decade was a prologue to the last three decades. With the religious right in disarray today after its long ascendancy, Jesus and Gin is a timely look at a parallel age when preachers held sway and politicians answered to the pulpit.

Book Description
It’s a system, a tool kit, a recipe book. Beginning with one irresistible idea--a complete home bar of just 12 key bottles--here’s how to make more than 200 classic and unique mixed drinks, including sours, slings, toddies, and highballs, plus the perfect Martini, the perfect Manhattan, and the perfect Mint Julep. It’s a surprising guide--tequila didn’t make the cut, and neither did bourbon, but genever did. And it’s a literate guide--describing with great liveliness everything from the importance of vermouth and bitters (the “salt and pepper” of mixology) to the story of a punch bowl so big it was stirred by a boy in a rowboat.
