Book Description
Give people power to do their job and clear the decks of anything that keeps them from doing it, and leave your ego on shore. That’s the advice of D. Michael Abrashoff, author of The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal bestseller It’s Your Ship. Our ship, USS Benfold, was serving in the Persian Gulf in the 1997 Iraq crisis, and the entire U.S. fleet there was snagged in a giant communications snafu. At any moment, some 7,000 messages could go astray or just stop moving. Ironically, Benfold and many other ships were equipped with a new satellite system for launching Tomahawk missiles. But most radio operators hadn’t been trained to use it for anything besides launching missiles. Not so John Rafalko, who pored over its manuals and told me it could solve all our communications problems. I reported this to the admiral’s chief of staff for communications, who rejected the idea. With the fleet verging on chaos, I went over his head and told the admiral--who erupted, chewed out his subordinate, and ordered him to adopt Rafalko’s plan immediately. We flew John all over the Gulf to train other operators, and suddenly the whole fleet was communicating seamlessly. This radioman saved the Navy’s bacon: My only role was to listen and back him up.

Book Description
The legendary New York Times bestselling tale of top-down change for anyone trying to navigate today's uncertain business seas. When Captain Abrashoff took over as commander of USS Benfold, it was like a business that had all the latest technology but only some of the productivity. Knowing that responsibility for improving performance rested with him, he realized he had to improve his own leadership skills before he could improve his ship. Within months, he created a crew of confident and inspired problem-solvers eager to take the initiative and responsibility for their actions. The slogan on board became "It's your ship," and Benfold was soon recognized far and wide as a model of naval efficiency. How did Abrashoff do it? Against the backdrop of today's United States Navy, Abrashoff shares his secrets of successful management including: See the ship through the eyes of the crew: By soliciting a sailor's suggestions, Abrashoff drastically reduced tedious chores that provided little additional value. Communicate, communicate, communicate: The more Abrashoff communicated the plan, the better the crew's performance. His crew eventually started calling him "Megaphone Mike," since they heard from him so often. Create discipline by focusing on purpose: Discipline skyrocketed when Abrashoff's crew believed that what they were doing was important. Listen aggressively: After learning that many sailors wanted to use the GI Bill, Abrashoff brought a test official aboard the ship-and held the SATs forty miles off the Iraqi coast. From achieving amazing cost savings to winning the highest gunnery score in the Pacific Fleet, Captain Abrashoff's extraordinary campaign sent shock waves through the U.S. Navy. It can help you change the course of your ship, no matter where your business battles are fought.

Book Description
Are you a “Not-See”? Do you not see? Most historians did not see the amazing discoveries explained in this book about the academic work of Professor Dr. Rex Curry. Most people do not see it because they have been deceived by socialist schools (government schools) and the old media. The symbol on the cover of this book represents the “Not-See” movement. Modern political debates often describe the only two opposing alternatives as “Communists” versus “Nazis.” The description is a dishonest trick: the words “Communist” and “Nazi” are used to divert attention from the larger shared problem of “Socialism.” The famed Linguist Dr. Rex Curry exposed modern historical amnesia concerning Hitler’s vocabulary. Almost everyone (including every so-called "scholar") refers ignorantly to Hitler as a "Nazi" or a "Fascist" and not as a "Socialist." Educational Outreach Programs (EOPs) energized by Dr. Rex Curry's scholarship are the only services that inform benighted scholars that "Hitler self-identified as Socialist. He did not self-identify as Nazi, nor as Fascist". No other linguist provides this vital public awareness. So, if you ever see a sentence like the following one, then you know it was from EOPs for Dr. Curry's work: "Hitler didn't call himself Nazi or Fascist, he called himself Socialist". The linguistic EOPs above led to many amazing historical discoveries, including revelations about Anne Frank’s Diary; Adolf Hitler’s “Mein Kampf”; Sophie Scholl’s White Rose group; Joseph Goebbels’ “Der Nazi Sozi”; Martin Niemoller’s verse “First They Came For the Socialists”; the swastika symbol, the hexagram (Star of David), and how Hitler changed BOTH symbols together; the etymological history of “Roman Salute”; and much more! Except for the American Linguist Laureate Dr. Rex Curry, every other historian did not see how the USA’s Pledge of Allegiance led to Nazi salutes and Nazi behavior; and how the original pledge’s use of military salutes led to Nazi salutes. Also, historians did not see the similar symbolism of Adolf Hitler's NSV, SA, and SS logos, as compared with the logo of Hitler's party: the National Socialist German Workers Party. Even today, only exceptional scholars with extraordinary skills (e.g. Dr. Curry) are able to discern the “S”-letter shape of the NSV’s logo (The National Socialist People's Welfare; in German: Nationalsozialistische Volkswohlfahrt). The "S" symbolism is almost as difficult to perceive as in Hitler’s Hakenkreuz (hooked cross). It is as undetectable as in the symbols for the SS and SA (Schutzstaffel and Sturmabteilung). All historians (other than Dr. Curry) did not see how Hitler used his party's symbol to represent "S"-letter shapes for "SOCIALIST." Do you not see? Professor Curry transformed the culture of India along with Hinduism and Buddhism. Before Dr. Curry’s discoveries, Buddhists and Hindus published complaints that “Hitler stole their swastika symbol and ruined it and they want to restore respect for their ancient symbol.” Educational Outreach Programs (EOP) about Dr. Curry’s work taught India’s commentators that Hitler’s symbol was not a swastika, and that Hitler never called it a swastika. An upheaval occurred among Buddhists and Hindus in their objections. Now they proudly assert: “Hitler called his symbol a Hakenkreuz (hooked cross), not a swastika. It was not the same symbol. Dr. Curry told us!”

Book Description
Based on his Pulitzer Prize-winning story, Jim Sheeler's unprecedented look at the way our country honors its dead; Final SaluteIs a stunning tribute to the brave troops who have lost their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan and to the families who continue to mourn them They are the troops that nobody wants to see, carrying a message that no military family ever wants to hear. It begins with a knock at the door. "The curtains pull away. They come to the door. And they know. They always know," said Major Steve Beck. Since the start of the war in Iraq, marines like Major Beck found themselves thrown into a different kind of mission: casualty notification. It is a job Major Beck never asked for and one for which he received no training. They are given no set rules, only impersonal guidelines. Marines are trained to kill, to break down doors, but casualty notification is a mission without weapons. For Beck, the mission meant learning each dead marine's name and nickname, touching the toys they grew up with and reading the letters they wrote home. He held grieving mothers in long embraces, absorbing their muffled cries into the dark blue shoulder of his uniform. He stitched himself into the fabric of their lives, in the simple hope that his compassion might help alleviate at least the smallest piece of their pain. Sometimes he returned home to his own family unable to keep from crying in the dark. In Final Salute, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Jim Sheeler weaves together the stories of the fallen and of the broken homes they have left behind. It is also the story of Major Steve Beck and his unflagging efforts to help heal the wounds of those left grieving. Above all, it is a moving tribute to our troops, putting faces to the mostly anonymous names of our courageous heroes, and to the brave families who have made the ultimate sacrifice for this country. Final Saluteis the achingly beautiful, devastatingly honest story of the true toll of war. After the knock on the door, the story has only begun.

Book Description
Companies and ships have this in common: Success depends heavily on crew morale, the eagerness born of spirit, zeal, and zest. You can’t buy morale, much less bribe or bully it into existence. But you can sharply boost it--at little or no cost--by spicing serious work days with unserious good times. These are difficult times in the business world. No company or job is safe anymore. And the fear of unemployment is real for many people. In some respects, high morale can be defined as having faith that your company’s business prospects will mean that you continue to have a job. However, we must all strive for greater excellence in the workplace, even in tough times. Every manager’s worst nightmare is a workplace full of enemies--angry, bitter, bored people who despise their bosses, along with themselves. The next worse nightmare is a workforce of robots who do their jobs as convicts do time, with zero creativity, enthusiasm, or loyalty to the company and its goals. In both cases, leaders have themselves mainly to blame. Along with myopic hiring, they create and perpetuate dysfunctional companies by not seizing their power--and duty--to humanize the workplace, lighten up the climate, and help people actually enjoy their jobs.

Book Description
When Michael F. Golden took over as CEO of Smith & Wesson in 2004, he faced a difficult situation. The world-famous handgun maker had been shooting blanks, while competitors stole markets and opportunities went untargeted. Here are the seven proven principles that guided Golden and his team and how you can put them to work in your business. It was an historic job. And it was a job of historic proportions. In December 2004, I assumed the post of CEO of Smith & Wesson, the storied gun manufacturer with deep roots in U.S. history. Its revolvers had been used in the Civil War and in settling the American West. In modern times, police, hunters, and soldiers the world over have carried Smith & Wesson firearms. But when I arrived, the glory days were long gone. The company had surrendered entire markets. Customers had boycotted its products. It was being investigated for accounting irregularities. Its stock had dropped as low as $1.50 a share. All we had to do was fix all that and put a stamp of “Reborn in the U.S.A.” on this great old enterprise.

Book Description
The New York Times bestselling work of undercover reportage from our sharpest and most original social critic, with a new foreword by Matthew Desmond, author of Evicted Millions of Americans work full time, year round, for poverty-level wages. In 1998, Barbara Ehrenreich decided to join them. She was inspired in part by the rhetoric surrounding welfare reform, which promised that a job—any job—can be the ticket to a better life. But how does anyone survive, let alone prosper, on $6 an hour? To find out, Ehrenreich left her home, took the cheapest lodgings she could find, and accepted whatever jobs she was offered. Moving from Florida to Maine to Minnesota, she worked as a waitress, a hotel maid, a cleaning woman, a nursing-home aide, and a Wal-Mart sales clerk. She lived in trailer parks and crumbling residential motels. Very quickly, she discovered that no job is truly "unskilled," that even the lowliest occupations require exhausting mental and muscular effort. She also learned that one job is not enough; you need at least two if you int to live indoors. Nickel and Dimed reveals low-rent America in all its tenacity, anxiety, and surprising generosity—a land of Big Boxes, fast food, and a thousand desperate stratagems for survival. Read it for the smoldering clarity of Ehrenreich's perspective and for a rare view of how "prosperity" looks from the bottom. And now, in a new foreword, Matthew Desmond, author of Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City, explains why, twenty years on in America, Nickel and Dimed is more relevant than ever.
