Book Description
In 2002 the seat of the German government will relocate from Bonn to Berlin, completing the reunification process begun in 1990. Can German democracy endure the stresses of reunification? Edinger and Nacos, using the United States as a counterpoint, explain the salient aspects of the Federal Republic's political system and shed new light on the problems posed by the reunification of two very different nations.

Book Description
This book analyzes Germany's path-breaking Energiewende, the country's transition from an energy system based on fossil and nuclear fuels to a sustainable energy system based on renewables. The authors explain Germany's commitment to a renewable energy transition on multiple levels of governance, from the local to the European, focusing on the sources of institutional change that made the transition possible. They then place the German case in international context through comparative case studies of energy transitions in the USA, China, and Japan. These chapters highlight the multifaceted challenges, and the enormous potential, in different paths to a sustainable energy future. Taken together, they tell the story of one of the most important political, economic, and social undertakings of our time.

Book Description
"Based on relevant research from domestic and foreign academic circles, this book focuses on the path choices and transition of the main political forces of Germany (emperors, vassals, imperial cities, and farmers) in the early modern political and social transformation process in the 15-18th century, as well as the impact of this transition on the historical development of Germany after the 19th century. In this book, the author puts forward his own thoughts on the theory of "German special path", thereby revealing the "continuity" of the historical development of Germany. This book is the first in China that systematically and comprehensively explores the early political and social transition of Germany in modern times, reflecting the understanding of Chinese scholars on the issues of early political and social transition of Germany in modern times and the theory of "Germany's special path""--

Book Description
This edited monograph sets out to track the course of change in both Ireland and Germany and in Irish-German relations over the last 20 years. 1989 marked the 40th year since the establishment of the Federal Republic of Germany - the same year saw the toppling of the Berlin wall and with it the fall of the Iron Curtain. In Ireland, 1989 was a year nestled within a period of high unemployment and poor economic performance. Yet within a few years, a transformation occurred that brought unprecedented change, economically and socially. Therefore, symbolically speaking, a number of walls fell in Ireland that brought new spaces, if not freedoms - increased standards of living and better living conditions for many, new confidence in Self, and greater openness and tolerance for the Other within a society that had been predominantly monocultural for much of the twentieth century. The tenor of this book is one which charts, analyses, discusses and celebrates transition and change in Ireland, in Germany and in the relationship between Ireland and Germany in the hugely significant period of the last twenty years.

Book Description
Federalism in Germany has come to be viewed as the root cause of the country s current economic and social malaise. The federal political system which contributed enormously to the economic success and political stability of West Germany is now said to be outdated, overburdened and unworkable. German federalism is now widely seen as being synonymous with Reformstau (reform blockage) and Stillstand (inertia). Critics argue that the system urgently needs to change if Germany is to continue to compete in the global system. This major new text offers a unique scholarly evaluation of the major recent attempts to overhaul Germany s federal political architecture. It brings together thematic chapters by leading authorities on German federalism to provide a comprehensive assessment of the reform processes to date, their inception, scope, objectives and outputs. The contributions provide new insights into the dynamics of reform in key policy areas such as economic policy, Europe and the tax equalisation system, as well as in the institutional frameworks for decision-making. It will be essential reading for students of Germany, its politics, law and economics. This book was published as a special issue of the German Politics."

Book Description
The subject of this book is Europe after the cold war. The European security landscape has changed considerably. The period from November 1989 to November 1990 can be compared with such decisive dates in twentieth-century European history as 1918 and 1945. Germany and Europe have entered a crucial period of transition. While it was relatively easy to describe the dramatic events and changes in the making, it is now more difficult to demonstrate their mutual relationships within the framework of the new European system emerging from them. The documents published in this volume - many of them for the first time - provide an important record of this historic period. Key papers by some of the leading German politicians of this period, delivered at Potsdam in February 1990, are also presented. The volume provides the background for a better understanding of developments in Europe - particularly the role of the new German state, to contribute to a sober assessment of the role which the united Germany can play in an emerging new structure for European security, and to facilitate further research on these topics and related issues.
