Author: Friedhelm Radandt
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1000768309
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 184

Originally published in 1977, this volume traces the development of literary forms and themes and of movements and schools, during the overtly philosophical age. It begins with the prominent poets of the 1720s and 1730s: Brockes, Hagedorn and Haller. It charts the many attempts at formulating poetic theory, particularly those of Gottsched, Bodmer and Breitnger. Emphasis is placed on the dramatic writings of J. E. Schlegel, Gellert and Ch. F. Wordsworth Translated
Author: John Williams
Publisher: A&C Black
ISBN: 144118435X
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 338
Book Description
British writers of the Romantic Period were popular in Germany throughout the nineteenth century, and translations of Scott, Burns, Moore, Hemans, and Byron (among others) became widespread. This study analyses the reception of William Wordsworth's poetry in 19th century Germany in relation to other romantic poets. Research into Anglo-German cultural relations has tended to see Wordsworth as of little or no interest to Germany but new research shows that Wordsworth was clearly of interest to German poets, translators and readers and that there was significantly more knowledge of and respect for Wordsworth's poetry, and interest in his ideas and beliefs, than has previously been recognised. Williams focuses particularly on the work of Friedrich Jacobsen, Ferdinand Freligrath and Marie Gothein, who span the early, middle, and late years of the century respectively and establishes the wider presence of many others translating, anthologising and commenting on Wordsworth poetry and beliefs.

The Romantic Movement
Author: Alan Menhennet
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1351044850
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 284
Book Description
First published in 1981. This study concentrates on the exponents of the central period of German Romanticism, regarding as characteristic the mode in which the poet’s self becomes active only in response to external stimuli, most notably those of landscape. The author traces the main strands of thought and interests that preoccupy Romantic writers; the revolutionary attitude that is yet differentiated from that of writers like Byron by the lack of emphasis on individualism, the dualism of the bourgeois world and the ‘inner self’, the interest in language as an agency for the regeneration of the German spirit, and the concentration on folk-themes and the idea of Wanderung. This title will be of interest to students of literature.
