Book Description
Otto Hüther and Georg Krücken analyze the developments of the last 20 years in their new book on German higher education. The foreign observer of German higher education, even the informed foreign observer, struggles to find denominators, not to mention common denominators of a bewildering array of approaches. Otto Hüther and Georg Krücken, in this book, do an absolutely splendid job of offering theoretical perspectives, qualitative and quantitative data, and comparative assessments This book discusses the main higher education structures in Germany, both conceptually and with a particular emphasis on recent developments like, e.g., the growth and differentiation of the system, governance reforms, and the Excellence Initiative. It analyses recent developments from an international perspective, as the German system is clearly embedded in broader, transnational trends. As such, the book provides a comprehensive and detailed account of both new dynamics and stable paths in the German higher education system. This book will be of interest to scholars and students dealing with higher education or Germany as an object of study (e.g. in education research, science studies, organization studies, sociology, psychology, political science), and to higher education managers, leaders, and policymakers who are interested in recent trends in German higher education

Book Description
For more than half a century, discourses on the Nazi past have powerfully shaped German social and cultural policy. Specifically, an institutional determination not to forget has expressed a “duty of remembrance” through commemorative activities and educational curricula. But as the horrors of the Third Reich retreat ever further from living memory, what do new generations of Germans actually think about this past? Combining observation, interviews, and archival research, this book provides a rich survey of the perspectives and experiences of German adolescents from diverse backgrounds, revealing the extent to which social, economic, and cultural factors have conditioned how they view representations of Germany’s complex history.

Not illustrated. 1908 edition. Excerpt: ... chapter ii the development of educational institutions in the nineteenth century The ideas which were prevalent amongst the German people at the beginning of the nineteenth century have been outlined in the last chapter of the preceding book--lofty ideas of human dignity and human culture as conceived by Kant and Fichte, Goethe and Schiller. I have now to describe how the reconstruction of educational institutions was achieved during the first decades of the century. The tremendous changes which were brought about in the whole political situation by Napoleon, the legatee and executor of the Revolution, prepared the way for it. To avoid losing ourselves in details it will be well to confine ourselves mainly to Prussia, Regenera the German state which is generally acknowledged p"s/ to have led the way, for better and also for worse, in the domain of education during the nineteenth century. Of all European states Prussia had suffered the heaviest defeat in the collision with Napoleon, its whole political organisation having completely collapsed. In this way the erection of an entirely new structure became at the same time possible and necessary. It was undertaken in the decade following the battle of Jena, a decade of the most strenuous and fruitful activity. "Everybody was eager," as Schon once said, "to improve the existing state of things as well as himself, so that the nation might again become worthy of a better fate." Germany's best men--in truth, the noblest of the nation--stood ( at the head of the movement. It will suffice to mention here the names of Baron von Stein, Scharnhorst and Wilhelm von Humboldt. Stein reconstructed the organisation of the State. He began by establishi

Book Description
In the last twenty years, transnational perspectives have gained momentum in the field of historical-educational research. Scholars have made substantial efforts to rethink nation-based historiographies by reconstructing and reinterpreting the cross-border encounters and intertwined processes that have turned the history of education into a transnational enterprise. A closer look at specific transnational spaces furthers a better understanding of these processes. Against this backdrop, the book offers case studies focusing on transatlantic encounters with special regard to the manifold entanglements between Germany and the United States of America that represent one of the most complex, dynamic, and vivid educational spaces between the eighteenth and twentieth century. Drawing on excellent source material, each contribution examines interaction processes as the genuine transformative moment within any cross-border transfer, and investigates exchanges of concepts, institutions, and materials. Under this premise, the book draws attention to shifting trajectories in the German-American history of education that can be identified by focusing on long-lasting transnational entanglements. By offering a wide range of research approaches, the publication furthermore contributes innovative methodological thoughts to transnational histories of education that go beyond the German-American context and will interest students, emerging researchers, and experts of history of education.
