Published in 1995, this volume examines the Bray Associates, a philanthropic society founded by the missionary Thomas Bray. The Bray Associates was the parent organization of the Georgia Trustees, the founding and original governing body of the Georgia Colony. James Edward Oglethorpe led the Bray Associates from 1730 to 1732, a period of revitalization for the group. It was through the Associates that Oglethorpe's colonial ambitions gained the legitimacy needed to win Parliament's support. Rodney M. Baine argues that it was not Bray or Captain Thomas Coram, but rather James Oglethorpe who was the first individual to envision Georgia as a charitable colony for debtors. Further, the actual work involved in obtaining the Georgia Charter was accomplished by men appointed by Oglethorpe. Baine dates Oglethorpe's first vision of an American haven for debtors released from English prisons to 1729, when Oglethorpe began his efforts to move parliament toward a reform of the prison system. The minutes show Oglethorpe at all times in control of the mission of the Bray Associates, which he reorganized and expanded with the most active and able members of his parliamentary committee on prison reform. Baine believes that no other colony owes its beginnings more to the vision, determination, and activity of one man. A full introduction summarizes the developments in the creation of Georgia and in an appendix Baine disputes previous attributions of Georgia's founding vision to Bray and Coram.

Since 1732, when Georgia was created out of South Carolina territory, the boundary between the two states has been disputed. This controversy reignited in the 1970s, culminating in a suit filed by Georgia in the U. S. Supreme Court to ascertain the location of the true boundary line between the states. De Vorsey's book grows out of this controversy and is a detailed examination of the historical geography of that boundary. After reviewing the events that led to the 1977 litigation, De Vorsey provides a detailed analysis of Georgia's original charter and the 1787 Treaty of Beaufort--two documents crucial to an understanding of the dispute. Using documentary and cartographic resources, he reconstructs the geographical conditions that existed at the time the documents were drafted and investigates how eighteenth-century Georgians and South Carolinians perceived these conditions. In the course of his inquiry he discusses the tremendous natural forces that have sculpted and re-sculpted the unstable shorelines and islands formed by geologically youthful delta sediments. He considers, too, the impact of man on the environment as he attempted to control nature and improve navigability on the Savannah River. The study concludes with a discussion of the particular areas of the Savannah River's shores and islands involved in the Supreme Court litigation.

This list of settlers in Georgia up to 1741 is taken from a manuscript volume of the Earl of Egmont, purchased with twenty other volumes of manuscripts on early Georgia history by the University of Georgia in 1947. The 2,979 settlers are listed in alphabetical order, followed by their age, occupation, date of embarcation, date of arrival, lot in Savannah or in Frederica, and (where applicable) "Dead, Quitted, or Run Away." Footnotes give additional information concerning many of the people listed. This volume was published in 1949 to help scholarly research in the history of colonial of Georgia.
