Cubism
Author: Emily Braun
Publisher: Metropolitan Museum of Art
ISBN: 0300208073
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 394
Book Description
This beautifully illustrated volume tells the story of Cubism through twenty-two essays that explore the most significant private holding of Cubist art in the world today, the Leonard A. Lauder Collection, now a promised gift to The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The eighty works featured in this volume—by Georges Braque, Juan Gris, Fernand Léger, and Pablo Picasso‐are among the most important and visually arresting in the movement’s history. These masterpieces, critical to the development of Cubism, include such groundbreaking paintings as Braque’s Trees at L’Estaque, considered one of the very first Cubist pictures; Picasso’s Still Life with Fan: “L’Indépendant,” one of the first to introduce typography; Gris’s noirish, uncanny The Man at the Café, one of his most celebrated collages; and Léger’s uniquely ambitious Composition (The Typographer). Written by renowned experts on this subject, the essays trace the evolution of Cubism from its origins in the still lifes, portraits, and collages of Braque and Picasso through the precisely delineated compositions by Gris that prefigure the Synthetic Cubism of the war years to Léger’s distinctive intersections of spherical, cylindrical, and cubic forms that evoke the syncopated rhythms of modern life. Also included are a fascinating interview in which Leonard Lauder discusses his approach to collecting, an investigative essay on the information gleaned from the backs of the works themselves, and an authoritative catalogue that further establishes the lives of these magnificent objects. A publication to place alongside the great histories of Modernism, this comprehensive book will stand as the resource for understanding Cubism for many years to come. -

Georges Braque
Author: Jennifer Mundy

Pages : 94
Book Description
"Georges Braque (1882-1963) was one of the most revered and influential artists of his generation. He became famous for his role as co-inventor, with Picasso, of Cubism before the First World War, whilst the 'classical' quality of his later works, with their highly structured compositions and sublimated emotion, led him to be seen as a quintessentially French artist." "Braque made prints throughout his long career. He produced a small number of Cubist etchings and drypoints between 1908 and 1912. In the interwar years he made an important suite of etchings for a luxury edition of an ancient Greek text. It was only after the Second World War, however, that Braque began printmaking in earnest. Paris was then the international centre of fine art printing, and he was able to work with some of the best printers in the world. At the workshop of Fernand Mourlot, he made a series of Greek-inspired lithographs, along with such well-known still lifes as 'Teapot and Lemons' and 'Leaves, Colour, Light'. With the intaglio printer Aldo Crommelynck, he experimented with sugar-lift aquatint, producing images of great technical refinement." "One of the first School of Paris artists to take up colour lithography after the war, Braque was recognised in his lifetime as not only a great painter but also as a major printmaker. This book reproduces a wide selection of Braque's prints drawn from the artist's own collection, and includes a number of rare, uneditioned works. It also features an essay on Braque's life and achievement as a printmaker by Jennifer Mundy, Assistant Keeper in the Modern Collection of the Tate Gallery."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Birds
Author: Saint-John Perse
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781852353384
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 33
Book Description
Saint-John Perse A version by Derek Mahon These are birds, pure and simple, nothing more, their truth the secret of life itself . . . Derek Mahon s previous translation work includes versions of Jaccottet (Words in the Air, 1998) and Valéry (The Seaside Cemetery, 2001). To these he now adds Birds by Saint-John Perse whose long, discursive, musical texts owe something to Rimbaud s Illuminations but are finally unique. Among twentieth-century poets Perse is remarkable for his oceanic qualities, his global reach and philosophical optimism. Birds is about birds, but also about the artistic vocation itself, Yeats s lonely impulse of delight
