Book Description
How did geophysics begin? Who were the pioneers of this new science? What instruments did they devise to measure the Earth-related phenomena they were interested in? This Memoir attempts to answer such questions in a well-illustrated, and largely non-technical, account. The seventeenth century saw magnetism used as an aid to prospecting for iron ore in Sweden, and Isaac Newton’s derivation of the law of gravitational attraction. A gradually increasing interest in ‘physics of the Earth’ brought forth the new discipline of ‘geophysics’ in the early nineteenth century and, by the end of the following century, airborne and satellite-based investigations had become routine. The Emergence of Geophysics explores this evolution in several parallel strands: terrestrial magnetism and electricity, gravity, seismicity, heat, geodynamics and radioactivity, broadly reflecting the timing of their introduction as tools aiding geophysical studies. Biographical information is included for many of its practitioners and the book should be of interest to both geophysicists and to anyone interested in the history of Earth science.

Book Description
Interdisciplinary study on the role of earthquakes in the eastern Mediterranean Does the “Minoan myth” still stand up to scientific scrutiny? Since the work of Sir Arthur Evans at Knossos (Crete, Greece), the romanticized vision of the Cretan Bronze Age as an era of peaceful prosperity only interrupted by the catastrophic effects of natural disasters has captured the popular and scientific imagination. Its impact on the development of archaeology, archaeoseismology, and earthquake geology in the eastern Mediterranean is considerable. Yet, in spite of more than a century of archaeological explorations on the island of Crete, researchers still do not have a clear understanding of the effects of earthquakes on Minoan society. This volume, gathering the contributions of Minoan archaeologists, geologists, seismologists, palaeoseismologists, geophysicists, architects, and engineers, provides an up-to-date interdisciplinary appraisal of the role of earthquakes in Minoan society and in Minoan archaeology – what we know, what are the remaining issues, and where we need to go. Book Description
A technique for visualizing Earth's subsurface at high resolution Hidden out of sight in Earth’s subsurface are a range of geophysical structures, processes, and material movements. Muography is a passive and non-destructive remote sensing technique that visualizes the internal structure of solid geological structures at high resolution, similar in process to X-ray radiography of human bodies. Muography: Exploring Earth's Subsurface with Elementary Particles explores the application of this imaging technique in the geosciences and how it can complement conventional geophysical observations. Volume highlights include: Principles of muography and pioneering works in the field Different approaches for muographic image processing Observing volcanic structures and activity with muography Using muography for geophysical exploration and mining engineering Potential environmental applications of muography Latest technological developments in muography The American Geophysical Union promotes discovery in Earth and space science for the benefit of humanity. Its publications disseminate scientific knowledge and provide resources for researchers, students, and professionals.
