The Living Landscape, Second Edition
Author: Frederick R. Steiner
Publisher: Island Press
ISBN: 1610910915
Category : Architecture
Languages : en
Pages : 497
Book Description
The Living Landscape is a manifesto, resource, and textbook for architects, landscape architects, environmental planners, students, and others involved in creating human communities. Since its first edition, published in 1990, it has taught its readers how to develop new built environments while conserving natural resources. No other book presents such a comprehensive approach to planning that is rooted in ecology and design. And no other book offers a similar step-by-step method for planning with an emphasis on sustainable development. This second edition of The Living Landscape offers Frederick Steiner’s design-oriented ecological methods to a new generation of students and professionals. The Living Landscape offers • a systematic, highly practical approach to landscape planning that maximizes ecological objectives, community service, and citizen participation • more than 20 challenging case studies that demonstrate how problems were met and overcome, from rural America to large cities • scores of checklists and step-by-step guides • hands-on help with practical zoning, land use, and regulatory issues • coverage of major advances in GIS technology and global sustainability standards • more than 150 illustrations. As Steiner emphasizes throughout this book, all of us have a responsibility to the Earth and to our fellow residents on this planet to plan with vision. We are merely visiting this planet, he notes; we should leave good impressions.

General Knowledge for Competitive Examinations in Urban / Regional Planning
Author: Sakshi Sahni
Publisher: Insta Publishing
ISBN: 939384917X
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 242
Book Description
The idea of the book floated about seven years ago, back in 2015, in the reading room of Bhai Gurdas Library, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar when I (Sakshi Sahni) was preparing for my Ph.D. entrance exam along with Hardeep Sekhon who was preparing for Assistant Town Planner exam. As time flew, Sanjay Mishra got involved with the tedious task of typing registers. Puneet Mehra got involved in co-ordinating, sorting and arranging the PPSC papers. Simranjot Singh took all the task of sketching and preparing illustrations using various software like Autocad, Sketchup, coral draw, photo shop etc. Gulpreet Kaur helped in the academic section editing and drafting. Rawal Singh helped in history of Architecture questions and its framing. The huge daunting task which seemed impossible was completed in the span of seven years by consistent efforts of all the authors with grace of almighty. With all of us placed at different locations, managed to contribute what we could do at our best. Planning students were great motivation and inspiration to us for whom the work has been produced and will help in their PPSC and GATE exam preparation. Since all the authors are the product of Guru Ram Das school of Planning, who made us what we are today we would sincerely like to express our gratitude towards our alma mater and would like to dedicate this book to Guru Ram Das ji and to the Department which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.

The Architecture of Community
Author: Leon Krier
Publisher: Island Press
ISBN: 1610911245
Category : Architecture
Languages : en
Pages : 486
Book Description
Leon Krier is one of the best-known—and most provocative—architects and urban theoreticians in the world. Until now, however, his ideas have circulated mostly among a professional audience of architects, city planners, and academics. In The Architecture of Community, Krier has reconsidered and expanded writing from his 1998 book Architecture: Choice or Fate. Here he refines and updates his thinking on the making of sustainable, humane, and attractive villages, towns, and cities. The book includes drawings, diagrams, and photographs of his built works, which have not been widely seen until now. With three new chapters, The Architecture of Community provides a contemporary road map for designing or completing today’s fragmented communities. Illustrated throughout with Krier’s original drawings, The Architecture of Community explains his theories on classical and vernacular urbanism and architecture, while providing practical design guidelines for creating livable towns. The book contains descriptions and images of the author’s built and unbuilt projects, including the Krier House and Tower in Seaside, Florida, as well as the town of Poundbury in England. Commissioned by the Prince of Wales in 1988, Krier’s design for Poundbury in Dorset has become a reference model for ecological planning and building that can meet contemporary needs.
