Book Description
Excerpt from Genealogy of the Woodward Family of Chester County, Pennsylvania: With an Appendix Giving a Brief Account of the Woodwards of Some Other Portions of the United States This work, at its inception, was only_intended to contain information of the descendants of my father, but, others becom ing interested, efforts were made to ascertain what could be learned of the descendants of those bearing the name Woodward who settled in Chester county, Pennsylvania, at a very early date, in order that 'such information might be included. To some of its readers no apology is necessary for its incomplete ness to others I would state that it is difficult to ascertain the whereabouts of the'different branches of the family, and, when found, many treat letters of inquiry with silent indifference. There are, doubtless, some errors and very many omissions in the work, but they are unavoidable at present. A list will be kept of those securing the book, and well - attested corrections of errors, if any, will be forwarded to them at the end of the year. I herein take occasion to express my indebtedness to Gilbert Cope, Esq., for the very valuable information which he. Book Description
By: J. Smith Futhey & Gilbert Cope, Orig. Pub. 1881, 1196 pages, New Index, ISBN #0-89308-978-8. Chester County was one the first three counties in Pennsylvania and was created in 1682. It sits in the southeastern corner of the state boarding Maryland. This book is not too different from other county history books of this era. With such topics as trade & transportation, labor, farming, towns & burrows, Boundary Lines, politics, Proprietary Interests & Land Titles, and religion - all important in the development of the county - are carefully discussed. This type of county history book can help one develop ideas or paths to those missing ancestors by showing the customs and traditions of the local residents. A particular useful feature of this book is the extensive biographical information included (approx. half of the book). This volume contains more than 350 biographical sketches, included in which are some 10,000 additional family members. The New Index for this edition has approximately 32,000 entries.

Book Description
Excerpt from A Record of the Cope Family: As Established in America, by Oliver Cope, Who Came From England to Pennsylvania About the Year 1682, With the Residences, Dates of Births, Deaths and Marriages of His Descendants as Far as Ascertained This undertaking, which has been a considerable time in progress, is at last concluded, though not so complete as might be desired. Owing to the difficulty in dis covering the residences, together With the neglect of many to answer inquiries, and other circumstances, it is almost impossible to obtain a complete record of so large a family. Consequently there is much information want ing, and probably errors in what is given; that from different sources not agreeing, in some cases, on the same point. Still I think it is as near a perfect family record as anything of the kind I have met with, and contains more names, though there are many families whose descendants, if they could be ascertained, would far outnumber the Copes. It was not thought best to insert much information in regard to the wealth or occupations of the different members of the family, or anything that would tend to a discrimination between them, socially or morally. I may here offer my thanks to the many who have assisted me by furnishing the records of their own and other families. The information respecting some branches of the family was obtained near three years ago, and couse quently changes may have taken place of which no account is given.
