God’s Feet or the Mission’s Pack Donkey
Author: Hans-Martin Milk
Publisher: BASLER AFRIKA BIBLIOGRAPHIEN
ISBN: 3906927350
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 415
Book Description
The title of this book originates from the self-description of Namibian Evangelists in their own words. African evangelists of the Rhenish Mission Society (RMS) played a crucial but mostly overlooked role in shaping the spiritual and social networks that transformed indigenous communities from the early nineteenth century. The author draws from a wide range of German, Namibian and South African archival sources that have been supplemented with a large number of interviews, to explore the history of the indigenous evangelists of the RMS. African supporters were often the first heralds of the new religion at remote villages and cattle posts before the white strangers made an appearance. The Namibian evangelists’ familiarity with the traditional culture and the local vernacular endowed them with a credibility that many of the European newcomers found difficult to acquire. By interweaving mission and church history between 1820 and 1990 with a biographical approach, the author brings a hidden chapter in Namibian history to life.

Houses on the Sand?
Author: James Irvin Lichti
Publisher: Peter Lang
ISBN: 9780820467313
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 310
Book Description
"Under Hitler, Germany's state-linked provincial churches functioned as seedbeds of nationalism. A smaller and independent church form - the "free church" or denomination - offered greater promise of nonconformity. Linked by pacifist traditions, German Mennonites, Seventh-day Adventists, and Quakers promoted a range of liberal principles: empowerment of the individual conscience, respect for confessional diversity, and separation of church and state. Nonetheless, two of these denominations used these same principles to defend and even embrace the Nazi regime. This book examines what makes Christian communities - when meeting the harsh challenges of modernity - viable entities of faith or hollow forms."--BOOK JACKET.

Perilous Journey
Author: John B. Toews
Publisher: Kindred Productions (c) 1988
ISBN: 9780919797789
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 108
Book Description
The history of any movement is always complex. At best its dynamic can be only partially understood. This is true of the Mennonite Brethren living in the Russia of the 1860s and 1870s. Their story can only be understood in the context of the political, social and religious world in which they lived and the circumstances associated with its ongoing transformation. The Mennonite Brethren story is one of becoming and so the laudatory and the contradictory, the good and the bad are generously mixed. The author has tried to tell both sides of the early Brethren story. He has written a narrative history which will contribute much to a better understanding of the dynamics which shaped the early Mennonite Brethren experience in Russia.

From Weimar to Hitler
Author: Hermann Beck
Publisher: Berghahn Books
ISBN: 1785339184
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 464
Book Description
Though often depicted as a rapid political transformation, the Nazi seizure of power was in fact a process that extended from the appointment of the Papen cabinet in the early summer of 1932 through the Röhm blood purge two years later. Across fourteen rigorous and carefully researched chapters, From Weimar to Hitler offers a compelling collective investigation of this critical period in modern German history. Each case study presents new empirical research on the crisis of Weimar democracy, the establishment of the Nazi dictatorship, and Hitler’s consolidation of power. Together, they provide multiple perspectives on the extent to which the triumph of Nazism was historically predetermined or the product of human miscalculation and intent.
