Book Description
Showing chemists how to predict ion-exchange chromatography (IEC) separation behaviour and how to determime appropriate operating conditions, this reference illustrates procedures, apparatus and types of ion exchanges, emphasizing the design and application of large-scale IEC. Complete with more than 100 useful tables and diagrams, this text explains the effects of each variable on separation behaviour; compares models and equations describing behaviour of proteins in IEC with experimental results; introduces design calculation procedures for scale up, adapting IEC for individual requirements; discusses parameters affecting separation behaviour, including adsorption equilibria, stationary phase diffusion and axial dispersion; provides examples of applications, such as high or medium performance IEC and large scale operations and reviews both theorectical and experimental literature. This text serves as an reference for analytical, agricultural, food, and pharmaceutical chemists, chromatographers, food scientists and technologists, biochemists and biotechnologists.

Book Description
This book consists of a series of 82 precise, easy-to-read articles by internationally renowned scientists and emphasizes the practical approach to HPLC with minimal theory, although the underlying principles for peptide and protein separations are clearly expressed. All of the major modes of microbore, ultrafast and analytical HPLC are discussed, including size-exclusion, ion-exchange, reversed-phase, hydrophobic interaction, and affinity and immunoaffinity chromatography. A section on preparative HPLC, including displacement techniques, is also presented. Problem-solving approaches to the separation of various classes of biologically active peptides and proteins are thoroughly explored, while the importance of peptide standards for monitoring column performance and for optimizing separation conditions is emphasized. Several articles focus on the choice of the correct detection method (electrochemical, UV, fluorescence), as well as the need for a proper knowledge of approaches to column and instrument maintenance and trouble-shooting. A section on predictive approaches deals with both computer simulation of peptide separations and peptide structure. The book also includes complementary techniques to HPLC, as well as other useful applications of HPLC. It enables both novice and experienced chromatographers to realize the full potential of this extremely powerful technique, in the process making an important contribution to scientific literature.

Book Description
Encompassing all aspects of the structures of peptides and proteins, this book adopts a uniquely problem-oriented approach to the topic. Starting with a look at the structures and properties of the twenty amino acids that occur in proteins, and moving on to the synthesis of polypeptides and the isolation of proteins, Peptides and Proteins then addresses the methods of analysis of protein characteristics, including the modern methods of sequence analysis by mass spectrometry. Further chapters examine the three-dimensional nature of protein structure, and introduce the student to the use of computer applications (molecular graphics, databases, bioinformatics) in protein chemistry. Original research data is used in many of the problems, and throughout sufficient background biology is included, thus putting the subject into context for chemists. Aimed at first and second-year chemistry students, this title will also be of interest to students of biochemistry. Ideal for the needs of undergraduate chemistry students, Tutorial Chemistry Texts is a major new series consisting of short, single topic or modular texts concentrating on the fundamental areas of chemistry taught in undergraduate science courses. Each book provides a concise account of the basic principles underlying a given subject, embodying an independent-learning philosophy and including worked examples.

Book Description
These volumes provide a reference source of different gas chromatographic, liquid chromatographic, or thin-layer chromatographic techniques for the qualitative determination of various therapeutic agents, including antibiotics, vitamins and hormones, drugs of abuse in body fluids, dosage forms, or food stuffs. Over 5000 publications were reviewed to prepare tables of chromatographic data for 800 compounds, arranged alphabetically by generic drug name or by drug groups. A detailed summary of the extraction procedure described in each publication included in the table of a particular drug is also provided. This easy-to-read handbook is useful for selecting an appropriate chromatographic procedure for the determination of a given compound according to the available facilities.

Book Description
The introduction of high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) to the analysis of peptides and proteins some 25 years ago revolutionized the biological sciences by enabling the rapid and sensitive analysis of peptide and protein structure through the exquisite speed, sensitivity, and resolution that can be easily obtained. Today, HPLC in its various modes has become the pivotal technique in the characterization of peptides and proteins and currently plays a critical role in both our understanding of biological processes and in the development of peptide- and protein-based pharmaceuticals. The number of applications of HPLC in peptide and protein purification continues to expand at an extremely rapid rate. Solid-phase peptide synthesis and recombinant DNA techniques have allowed the production of large quantities of peptides and proteins that need to be highly purified. HPLC techniques are also used extensively in the isolation and characterization of novel proteins that will become increasingly important in the postgenomic age. The design of multidimensional purification schemes to achieve high levels of product purity further demonstrates the power of HPLC techniques not only in the characterization of cellular events, but also in the production of pepti- and protein-based therapeutics. HPLC continues to be at the heart of the analytical techniques with which scientists in both academia and in industry must arm themselves to be able to fully characterize the identity, purity, and potency of peptides and proteins.

Book Description
The first edition of Protein Purification Protocols (1996), edited by Professor Shawn Doonan, rapidly became very successful. Professor Doonan achieved his aims of p- ducing a list of protocols that were invaluable to newcomers in protein purification and of significant benefit to established practitioners. Each chapter was written by an ex- rienced expert in the field. In the intervening time, a number of advances have w- ranted a second edition. However, in attempting to encompass the recent developments in several areas, the intention has been to expand on the original format, retaining the concepts that made the initial edition so successful. This is reflected in the structure of this second edition. I am indebted to Professor Doonan for his involvement in this new edition and the continuity that this brings. Each chapter that appeared in the original volume has been reviewed and updated to reflect advances and bring the topic into the 21st century. In many cases, this reflects new applications or new matrices available from vendors. Many of these have increased the performance and/or scope of the given method. Several new chapters have been introduced, including chapters on all the currently used protein fractionation and ch- matographic techniques. They introduce the theory and background for each method, providing lists of the equipment and reagents required for their successful execution, as well as a detailed description of how each is performed.
