This book investigates two elliptical coordinations in German, Right Node Raising and Gapping. Ellipsis in both constructions is claimed to be the result of a phonological process which is conditioned by prosodic and focus semantic constraints. It is convincingly argued that Right Node Raising cannot involve raising to the right periphery: The alleged movement freely violates any of the well-known restrictions on syntactic movement and it does not alter the scope relations within the coordination. Gapping in contrast is more sensitive to syntactic conditions in that its remnants must be major syntactic constituents. The author carefully examines the close connection between focus and ellipsis in the two constructions. A considered discussion of focus structure demonstrates that the conjuncts are informationally dependent on each other. This co-dependence is also reflected in their particular intonational contour which is argued to be responsible for ellipsis in coordination.

It argues that the balance struck by mainstream generative grammar is wrong. This volume provides detailed studies of the crosslinguistically unusual mermaid construction in seventeen languages of Asia, including Modern Standard Japanese, and one language of Africa. This construction appears to be absent in languages of Europe, Oceania and the Americas. The name - mermaid construction - alludes to its paradoxical make-up, where the structure closely resembling a verb-predicate clause ends with what may look like a noun-predicate clause. Superficially it looks biclausal; however, syntactically it is monoclausal. It has a compound predicate which contains an independent noun, a clitic or an affix derived from a noun, or a nominalizer. Its compound predicate has a modal, evidential, aspectual, temporal, stylistic or discourse-related meaning. The paradox is resolved from a diachronic perspective insofar as a biclausal structure is reanalyzed as a monoclausal one. This volume shows how a noun may be reanalyzed to become a constituent of a predicate. It constitutes an important contribution to research on grammaticalization and in particular, the grammaticalization of nouns and more generally, to the typology of syntactic reanalysis.

The scientific study of speech production has been undertaken within a variety of disciplines, including linguistics, physiology, physical acoustics, and psychology, among others. In recent years, it has become possible to combine the knowledge accumulated within these separate disciplines to gain more insight into the nature of this complex human activity. Here, we apply an interdisciplinary focus to one of the most widely discussed and poorly under stood aspects of the speech signal. This study of fundamental voice frequency involves a mixture of linguistics, physical acoustics, and psychology. The rele vant aspects of each discipline are introduced in Chapter 1 so that readers with minimal background in at least one of these areas should be able to compre hend much of the whole. This book is written primarily as an original research treatise rather than as a review of the literature. However, many previous studies of fundamental fre quencyare discussed here, and the book should serve as both a reference source and a supplementary text in courses on speech communication taught within a number of disciplines. Because of the complexity of Fo patterns, graphical displays of the results playa particularly important role in this presentation. While the results of each experiment are summarized and discussed verbally within the text, the graphical displays, by comparison, represent a more inte gral part of this book than is often the case in treatments of speech production.
